Advice for me going into a start 2 TE draft?

Postby lukkynumber13 » Fri Jun 10, 2022 12:11 pm

About to go into a 14-team startup where it’s a super flex but also start 2 TE league.

I have never played in a start 2 TE league.

In my limited experience with positional premium leagues, those positions often get over drafted in a startup. I would expect this may happen in this draft?

Is there any advice, whether super specific or super broad, that you have for me going into this thing?

Also, one thought I had:

Would you be more likely to target lower end TEs that are teammates, in a league like this? Not as a “handcuff”, but more so I’m thinking of guys like Parham/Everett, Njoku/Bryant, Engram/Arnold, all 3 Indy guys, Albert O/Dulchic, etc

Most of the guys I mentioned are bench depth/stashes in a start 1 league, but here - I could at least lock up all the TE production from that team’s passing attack. I’m thinking especially of the Chargers, where we really have no clue if one of those guys (or McKitty) will be more dominant than the other, but likely the 2 of them combined should be fairly productive in that offense.

I wouldnlt say that the top TEs get overdrafted it's more likely that it's the middle to lower ones that get over drafted.

Pitts should be one of the first picks. I'd be happy with 2 TEs and 2 QBs (at good value) In the first 4 picks.

Especially with positions that have scarcity (basically anything other than WR) it is important to load up. Don’t be afraid to draft only QB/TE in the first 4-5 rounds.

Scott Connor did a good video and article recently on this website about this topic. I'd check it out.

If it’s best ball, I could see the teammate strategy you described possibly paying dividends, but in a managed league, it might be more of a headache trying to predict which one is gonna have the better game in any given week. You’d also be using two roster spots in hopes of finding one guy who’s startable, so at most, you could maybe employ it with one set of teammates. It’s definitely not a strategy I’d double down on. I actually think the idea of handcuffing makes more sense, especially if the incumbent is older and the backup is young and athletic. Kelce/Gray and Waller/Moreau are two that immediately come to mind.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

🦬PRIME🦬
QB: Hurts, Howell
RB: Mixon, Jones, Sanders, Dobbins, Akers, Roschon, Dowdle, Kelley
WR: Nuk, Godwin, Cooper, Lockett, Flowers, Chark, Collins, Hollins, Tillman, Tolbert
TE: Hockenson, Chig, Trautman
Taxi: Willis, Z. White, M. Mims, T. Palmer

Hull Awaits
$450 cap, 60 contract years

QB: Lawrence $5/3, Richardson $5/5, Minshew $1/0, Jones $1/0, Heinicke $1/0, Tyrod $1/0
RB: Achane $4/4, Warren $2/4, Roschon $7/5, Dillon $4/1, Hubbard $2/1, Kelley $1/0
WR: Nuk $78/1, MT $25/1, M. Williams $1/0, JSN $21/5, Reed $4/5, Rice $4/5, M. Wilson $2/5
TE: Thomas $1/0, Hill $1/0, Parham $1/0

I've had some success in these formats. My first question, though, is whether it's a start 2TE or is there the possibility of starting 3 or even 4 as flexes? Also, is it TE premium scoring?

In any event, you obviously want a stud. After that, though, the common theme for me was being able to identify which TEs in the pre-season mid TE2 to mid TE3 range that can overperform and sneak near the top 10. However, these need not be those ranked in dynasty rankings but rather redraft rankings. For example, one year I hit on both Logan Thomas and Robert Tonyan (I already had Kelce) and dominated. Those 'one year wonders' were available late and can be cycled each year.

So even though it's a start-up I would say to keep your eyes on older TEs like Tonyan again, Higbee (!!!), Hooper, Hurst, and Uzomah.

(I would think a startup of, say, Kittle (or higher depending on your draft slot)/Schultz/Higbee/Hurst would be fantastic.)

(League champ somehow)

WR C.Lamb, M.Evans, M.Pittman, D.Chark, R.Moore, D.Peoples-Jones

Thank you all very much!

In response to some Q’s:

No, it’s not bestball. Keep forever, head to head dynasty.

So, it’s start 2 TE minimum but yes we can flex at least 2 more if we want. It’s slight TE Premium scoring, but nothing too heavy. I think like 1.25PPR?

2TE start requirement is a far greater premium than 2.0 ppr for TEs.

If we look at the numbers. 14 team 2TE means there are 28 TEs required to be started on a given week. I can't think of a team where there are 2 TEs I'd want to start so right now there are plenty of weeks you are likely to get a 0 or low score. This means you ideally want one elite TE and one passable TE and then depth. If you end up with two elite TEs somehow you're golden

Yeah I'm a fan of his work for sure. He really digs deep at the strategy/game theory side of things.
