Kind of an interesting trade I made. 12 TM, SF

Gave: Pitts, Claypool
Got: 2.05 (Trey Benson), 2025 2nd

Analysis: I needed RB a lot more than I did TE (I have LaPorta). And I wanted to get off the Pitts wild ride, at least in this league where there is no TE PREM

________________________________________________

Through a series of 3 trades in my 12TM, SF, 2PPR for TE Prem league.

Gave: TJ Hockenson, Baker Mayfield, 2.12, Juwan Johnson

Got: 1.07 (Bowers), 1.10 (Penix), 2.01 (Trey Benson), Tank Dell, 4.07

The individual trades were essentially I gave 2.01/2.12 to get Dell, gave Hock to get 1.10/2.01, gave Baker to get 1.07 (yeah, i know...)

________________________________________________

16 TM, SF, TE PREM

Gave: Zay Flowers
Got: 1.11 (Penix), 2.11

Analysis: Drafted Penix at 1.11 as QB's are hard to get in a 16 tm SF. Used the 2.11 to trade up to take Sinott. Hated to have to get rid of Flowers.

I prefer ETN to Walker, but the gap isn’t this big to me. I don’t think it is awful, but it does look like you sold pretty low on Andrews.

I’d value the Walker/Charb package over etienne. Which then makes it Andrews + 2nd for 2nd + 3rd, which doesn’t make much sense.

Thanks. I thought it was pretty good. He originally offered the 1.10 for my 2.02 andn 25 2nd but I countered for 2.04, saying I wouldn't give up the extra second just so he could move back three picks. I also countered with the 2.02 and 2025 3rd, but he took the first offer and the 2.04. I'm kind of glad I made the trade anyway as two guys I really wanted at 2.02 went RIGHT BEFORE me—Pearsall and Ladd—at 1.11 and 1.12. Ouch.

For Team 2 in Sig, which is a contract and salary league.

TRADE 1
Gave: Bijan Robinson ($54 this year, $34 in 2025)
Got: Elijah Moore (costs $5 to drop this year) and held $4 of Robinson's salary this year only.

TRADE 2
Gave: Trevor Lawrence ($76 this year, $51 through 2026), Tony Pollard ($1 through 2027 but holding out -- needs salary bump to $31 or sits for 7 NFL games)
Got: Keaton Mitchell ($1 through 2027) and held $31 of Lawrence's salary this year only.

THOUGHT-PROCESS
My team as constructed would not have won in 2024. The only hope I had would be to defer the max of $60 to next year, crippling my team in 2025+ for an improved chance this year when I still wouldn't be anywhere near the favorite. I figured my best asset would be cap space, giving me three possible paths:

1) Load up on rookies in 2024 (our Rookie Auction in Sunday) and set myself up for 2025+ with a strong team and with cap space.
2) Hold my cap space until our August Auction and try to restock with veterans for a 2024 push.
3) Use my available cap space to advance salary, reducing my team's cap considerably in 2025+.

Despite the likely value loss in some of the trades (I kept more money than I would have liked for Lawrence, and Bijan in 2025+ is a strong value), I decided that the flexibility was worth it, and I didn't want to miss out on moving those high-priced players in case teams didn't have the cap space to absorb them later.

Just to ensure I understand this. You gave away Bijan Robinson and Trevor Lawrence for cap relief and no assets in return? Seems like you're doing it wrong...

Exactly. Plus veterans whose contracts expired.

Lawrence and Bijan were both overpriced for 2024 and were, based on previous years auctions, fairly priced for 2025+. I lose the talent but gain the cap space to replace it.

Plus, in this league, you can advance contracts (e.g., if a player has a $20 contract this year and next, I can pay him $39 this year and $1 next). So, even worst case, if I don't replace the players, I can realllllly stack the deck for 2025.

TL;DR -- Think of cap space as draft picks.

Having pondered.. and not knowing relatitive values. It's a deep rb glass next year. So I can see the thought there. But. Could you not accelerate bijians contract and have him for a $1 next season and still saved dollars? Or is my math wrong?

I believe he can use that money to buy rookies

That's a GREAT question, and that was the opportunity cost for me. Yes, I 100% could have done that. And then with all the cap room I would have had next year, rebuilt the team in the Auction. What ultimately led me to trade him is that 2025 is supposed to be deep with RBs, as you also noted. I could potentially get an RB close to Bijan's tier in 2025 that has some advantages:

1) Bijan's contract would expire in 2025 (though I could extend him), whereas the rookie RB would have at least a 3-year contract available.
2) As-is, I'd be wasting potentially one of Bijan's best years this year. With QBs/WRs who are young, I'm okay with that. With RBs, I don't like doing that.
3) I'd also be spending $87 on Bijan this year (as a follow-up to #2 above). I think I can use that $87 (well, $78 post-trade) much better this year.

That being said, I'm with you: I'm missing out on a HUGE opportunity in 2025 going in with a ton of cap room, Love, Bijan, AJB, and G Wilson on cheap contracts. I just don't love putting all my proverbial eggs in the idea that Bijan is going to be so elite in 2025 that he's worth the massive opportunity cost this year.
