Isaiah Spiller to the LAC Chargers: 2nd Round Rookie Gem or future JAG?

Chargers coach Brandon Staley said Joshua Kelley (knee) will miss "weeks, not days."
The back sprained his MCL in Week 6's Monday night win over the Broncos. Sony Michel will have a clear path to No. 2 duties while Kelley is sidelined. Perhaps it will also open up an active role for rookie fourth-round back Isaiah Spiller as well.

Time to see what we have, I guess.

Sony broke a few tackles for hard earned first down on 3rd and short at least. From what I saw from Spiller in pre-season, no chance he would have made that run, he would have dropped like a stone by the first tackler. Spiller just isn't very good, people are stuck in that devy take lock IMO, though TBH, I never thought he looked that good in college, either.

I’m mostly just hoping to see Spiller get a few snaps. I don’t care who he’s behind. This is a move in the right direction. Mostly just want to get some NFL regular season looks at him.

Exactly. The waiver wires have largely been picked clean in my leagues. It's not like there are other, better dynasty options out there. It's not like we're dropping him.

I don't understand the rush to call him a bust when he's literally a 21 year old that has played no regular season snaps yet. It sounds like we may see him get some snaps finally. So let's see it.

And I also don't know why anyone would be putting too much credit in Sony Michel running ahead of him, given that it's obviously a Brandon Staley decision, and that he is likely doing the "tough love, I need a veteran in there who won't f-it-up" etc. I don't know what that particular HC has earned thus far for us to trust his opinion on... well, anything.

I don't think there's really such thing as a 4th round bust, the odds are already against 4th rounders having long established careers. I've personally held the same opinion for the longest time, that he's just not a very good running back in terms of NFL talent. Until I see something that tells me differently, I'm inclined to keep that opinion.

JAG isn't the same thing as a bust. He will likely stick on an NFL roster for a while, but it's doubtful he ever has sustained FF relevance.

I know, but my take hasn't changed because I haven't been provided with new evidence to suggest it's wrong, whereas the devy people who thought he was some top end RB prospect have been given plenty.

And sadly, there wasn’t an obvious shutdown of such foolishness! There were multiple people on here advocating for “taking your guy” and being ok with Spiller around the 10-12 pick.

While you’re right that JAG isn’t necessarily a bust, it is if FFers are paying a late 1st/early 2nd rounder on him.

As far as lasting on a NFL roster for a while, I’d question that. This guy was targeted to be Ekeler’s counterpunch and he can’t get past multiple guys on the roster vying for the same position who are JAGs and he got deactivated behind them. If he played STs he probably would have been activated because he’d have at least some value to the team, but apparently he doesn’t even have that - I’d guess at a minimum because he’s too damned slow to play STs, and there could be other reasons that we don’t know because we haven’t seen him play.

RBs who are JAGs or less and can’t play STs don’t have long careers. Look at Trey Sermon. Cut by SF after 1 year and now in PHI he’s played 8 O snaps and 4 ST snaps through 6 weeks - and he’s a great comp for Spiller. Unless Sermon learns to be a quality long snapper he’s quite frankly a waste of roster space that NFL teams can’t afford for long. I’d be looking for him to be playing in Canada before too long and that very well could be Spiller’s career path.
