Startup pick value - resources/thoughts?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Startup pick value - resources/thoughts?

Postby ProfPoobah » Fri Jul 07, 2023 3:53 pm

I'm joining a start-up. 12 teams, full PPR SF, with a .5 TE premium but no designated TE spot (they can play flex) - QB/RB/WR/WR/4 Flex/SF. 9 Bench, 5 Taxi (rookies and 2nd-year), 2 IR.

I like to tinker, and try and increase some net value in the margins. Not miserable if I don't contend in year one, especially if it makes my team better in the long run. So with that in mind, I'm trying to figure out this deal...

The guy at #3 wants my pick at #6, in order to have two first rounders. My thinking off the cuff is the potential player I would draft (Burrow/Herbert/Lawrence/Bijan/Jefferson) is worth 3 firsts at least. But with a combination of re-draft and rookie picks, what can I get to make this deal worth it? Oh, a small wrinkle. We do 3rd round reversal, so his next few picks are #22, #34, #39, #58, #63 etc....

Other than mocking names to his picks and trying that way, do you have a suggestion on how to craft a redraft/rookie pick combination? And what would it take for you to drop from #6 to #22 in a startup?

In a Superflex league, elite QBs are just too valuable. I couldn't see moving down that far. It's possible, if not likely the top 12 QBs are gone before it gets back to your 2nd round pick and you'll be playing catch up at the most important position.

I was just in this position in an FFPC where the TE has the same premium respectively. I was the 7 spot and hoped that WR fell to me, took Jefferson. The way the draft turned out there really isn’t any other way I’d have it. I’d have gone Chase if Jj went before. There are just a girth of QB that all fall in a similar range right now. Also FFPC has a 3QB max in the startup which makes it easier to wait. To answer your question if I had to make the trade, I’d want his future 1 and 2 in addition to his startup 2nd and 4th. The trade would kinda look like JJ for Olave, Etienne and 1+2

Really tough to try and make this deal work because of what you will be losing. At the very least, the other managers 2 - 4 rounds + a 1st but even still, I think you are behind on an elite or top end QB to build around. The deal has the be well worth it for you and hard to imagine the other manager sets themselves back this far either.

I don’t think I would even really consider it if I were you. Start 9 with 9 man benches (plus 5 taxi) puts a premium on the top tier players. Depth isn’t as important as having the heavy hitters. Even if you’re okay with a productive struggle, you NEED top tier QB in a SF and you aren’t going to see that in the 2nd round and beyond. You do not want to count on trying to fill your elite QB slots through the rookie draft.

I would almost argue that you attempt to do what the person who is trying to trade with you is doing. Try to secure another 1st round pick and snag 2 elite QBs, but don’t leverage yourself out of picks. I recently did this strategy in a 2QB startup. It is team 3 in my sig. Is the team sexy? Not outside QB. But. I’m set at the most important position for 8-10 years, plus I have (3) 24 1sts to draft for need in skill positions. I traded my 2, 3, 5, and 10th round startup picks for the 1.05, 7, 8, and 12th round startup picks. Not only did that not put me behind by not making all my picks, but I stocked up picks in rounds 7-10 to snag serviceable starters. I also moved my 4 and 6 round picks for a 24 1st plus picks in the 9 and 10 round. Hence, the extra 24 1sts. Food for thought anyways…

I would stay put if it was me but if you want to move down, get his 2024 rookie 1st and maybe his 9th round pick. So his startup 2nd and 9th and a rookie 1st for your 1.06.

Typical league id be very willing to trade back here for a haul but as someone above pointed out, 9 + 9 bench leaves little/no room to mess around with a depth accumulation strategy.

Personally wouldn’t play in a league with no bench like this because it makes rebuilding very tough for bleep teams, but that’s irrelevant, you want studs and to consolidate in this format, would take a wild overpay here for me.

If you plan on proceeding with a trade, you have to make the price what you would in an existing leagues for a top-end QB. Multiple high-end assets. Your partner has to feel the pain of getting 2 top QBs. Don’t send any other startup picks back, unless you have to by league rule then make it your last pick(s), and get their 24 and 25 1sts. Anything less them getting their cake and eating it too
