Here's the Schefter statement.

Josh Gordon's one-game suspension today could cost him millions. By being suspended for last game of season, Gordon will be active for only 5 games this season, falling one game short of what he needs for an accredited season. Thus, after next season, Gordon will be a restricted free agent, not the unrestricted free agent he was scheduled to be. In the NFL, a player needs to be active for six games to earn an accredited season. He needs to become an unrestricted free agent. Gordon was active for five games this season, due to his suspensions, and with this most recent one, will fall one game short of having this count as an accredited season toward free agency.

NFLPA appeal coming. This sets a dangerous precedent.

So what should Gordon owners do? (I don't own him, just curious)

Do what we always do, hold on a wait...for most of us, the guy has too much potential to sell low on at this point...

I'm selling. From Twitter.

@MaryKayCabot: The 1-game suspension was the next step for #Browns Josh Gordon, who's been late to other team functions this season and fined for them.

The guy can't make it through four games without multiple violations. I'll be cautious in negotiations that I don't sell for pennies on the dollar but he will be off my squads before the draft rolls around.

I bet the RFA part had nothing to do with it. If they're fighting for a playoff spot I bet he doesn't get that suspension.

I disagree. From a management perspective, I think this move kills two birds with one stone: Keep Gordon another year for a dirt cheap rate, and drop the hammer on players acting out to a new head coach in hopes of keeping order in the locker room.

I think this is the time to buy low on the guy if owners are spooked.

Don't be a dumbass and show up late/miss mandatory team functions, or you'll lose millions of dollars? Sounds like a good precedent to set to me.

The question is whether the discipline is consistently applied. If NFLPA can show similar actions didn't result in a suspension for another Browns player, he has a case. If the Browns treated Gordon the same as others, then he doesn't. It's quite simple.

The NFLPA will be all over this one. They were probably just waiting for one little misstep so they could do this to him. From the way the Browns have been run for years, this doesn't come as a surprise

I'm not going to be jumping on the conspiracy theory boat just yet; it's not unprecedented for guys to get benched for violating team rules. I guess it's possible the suspension was handed down with malice, but I'm not sure Gordon has earned the right to get the benefit of the doubt from me.
