Was offered two 3rds for Howell. Seems light?
He got 250 points this past year. Does he start next year?
They are the 3.04 and 3.12.

My other QBs are Mahomes, Mayfield, ARodgers, and Flacco.

Thoughts?

Howell for me. He’s probably not the starter next year, but he showed enough that he’s worth a dice roll. This offer is just too light.

Don't sweat it. The whole thing is sort of low stakes because of the pieces involved.

This is mostly where I stand on Howell and this offer.

When I think about part-time starters /slash/ back-up QBs, I put them mostly in two big buckets.
1) Decent QBs who are good enough to start most (or all) of a season and produce decent fantasy stats. And maybe even get a conditional starting job in the NFL for a year or two. Mayfield and Minshew lead this bucket, with JimmyG (not so much these days,)

2) Pure back-ups who won't be given a chance to compete in training camp, and if the starter is out for the season the team might rather bring in a free agent rather than trust a season to this back-up. This is probably 85-90% of all non-day1 starters. Wentz, Trubinsky, Devito, Zappe, Darnold.

To me, it's glaringly obvious Howell is headed for bucket 2. He didn't show any ability to be a starting NFL QB. He's a decent back-up, but is not close to being good enough to be a starter. In SF, he's worth a hold if he's your 3rd QB. However, if I have a better 3rd QB (and I darn sure hope I do) I'm okay with trading Howell for a couple of 3rds. Realistically, after he further proves his inability in 2024, his value might drop below that.

The question is, do you want to cash out now, or is it worth the hope equity to hold on to Howell for that 1:500 chance he gets a starting job and looks good enough to keep it long enough to get a 2nd for him? There's also the line of thought that says two 3rds are not worth much and why not just hold an NFL back-up until he's worthless.

I don’t think it’s light at all, but I’m of the belief Howell is done as a starter (outside a spot start due to injury). I’d take it.

But as others have mentioned, it’s a low stakes trade. If you believe in Howell, keep him.

Not sure the gap between 2x 3rds and 2x 3rds a 4th and Boyd is really that vast lol. If you're willing to do it for the latter, you should probably be willing to do it for the former.

Truth. If anything, I would ask for one 2nd. But settle for 2 3rds.

Personally I dont get all the hate. His offensive line was horrific. In November he had lead the league in passing yards and completions (and attempts and interceptions as well). It was basically his rookie year since he only had one start the previous year. He has a good arm and some running ability.

I am not saying the offer is not fairish, but would rather gamble on him than 3rd round picks.

I'm trying to figure out who will be there at 3.04 and 3.12.

QB—I doubt any QB of value (top five) will be there.
RB—With this RB class seemingly weak, IDK.
WR—Probably some good fliers at 3.04, ADP shows Pearsall, Wilson, Rice, etc.
TE—Some show Sanders being there, but in a TEP league I doubt he'll be there.

So would I rather have say Sanders TE and Pearsall thatn Howell? IDK.
I still have Mahomes, Mayfield, and Rodgers. Flacco probably goes away. AR isn't long for the NFL.

I sent out a few other offers moving Howell for more, we'll see if anyone bites.

I agree here. The value is probably pretty fair but I’d rather take the shot on a young guy that showed he is fairly capable even in a pretty bad offense. The biggest negative I can see is that Washington is almost definitely adding a top 3 QB in the draft which means Howell’s days starting for Washington are definitely over barring an injury. With that said, I can easily see him getting traded somewhere to get another shot. Teams are desperate for even mediocre QB play and we’ve seen guys like Tim Boyle get multiple runs. Do you think Tim Boyle is better than Howell? He’ll get another chance somewhere but it’s a gamble as far as what he’ll do with that chance.
