Bummer. Was really hoping for a Lions-Ravens Super Bowl, and unfortunately not getting either.

Yeah, doubling down after losing big can be awful to watch. Emotional decision piled on to a former emotional decision. Was just awful coaching.

This is gut-wrenching for Lions fans. No two ways about it. I'm just not a fan of pushing the envelope that much on 4th down in the 2nd half of a playoff game (as many here are thinking). The first one felt gross even if it was close to making it. The 2nd one was the really egregious one for me. To not try and tie a playoff game late in the 4th quarter is almost unforgivable. Fire Campbell and keep Ben Johnson in house... might be the best way to keep this thing intact heading into next season. The Campbell "shtick" is going to get old quickly for Lions fans after this one.

It felt like chasing gambling losses.

Purdy for league MVP! He would definitely be the latest draft pick to win one. Has an undrafted free agent ever won it?

Does Campbell lose the locker room after this one? Do the players think that maybe they should have gone for the tie late in the game?

I'm not suggesting that Campbell should be fired. But I can say that as a Seahawks fan, the call to throw on the goal line rather than let Marshawn Lynch take a handoff with a chance to ice that Hawks/Pats Super Bowl changed the fortunes of the franchise. The team was never the same after that loss. And there was a lot of infighting. Richard Sherman would tell you so.

Great call here. Interesting comparison. It has a similar feel... not quite as bad as the Lynch call but a very similar feel. Good post. Also, I could see them letting Campbell go ONLY if they think Ben Johnson was the REAL reason for this team's success.

I agree, thought it was an awful 2nd half coaching job by Campbell. The Lions left multiple plays on the field, but Campbell coached them from a plus 17 advantage to trailing by 2 possessions while giving up the chance to score points, twice.

The thought of firing Campbell is ridiculous though. He built this team better than any coach has built a team in a long long time.

I will never understand this mentality, and it's for too prevalent in today's game, from signalling first downs when losing, celebrating TD's before you've scored, to this type of thing. Serves him right.

You take the points on the road. KC made the same mistake in the first game but it didn’t end up hurting them. It’s hard enough to win on the road in the playoffs. DET should have been ecstatic to swap FGs and go back up by 3 scores. 2 minutes later it was a one score game. Then the errors started multiplying.

And I’d be certain that our number crunching nerds would still defend going for it there despite the fails in both games.
Maybe if you're JUST looking at conversion percentage of 4th and 2 from the 28, but if you look at what you're win probability would be going up by 17 would be there, I think the weight of that outweighs the simply conversion percentage. FG percentage on a 45 yard FG is pretty high, and let's not forget, IF you convert the 4th down, you still are only up by 14, not 17. There is more than 1 math equation to look at here, even if you're being "nerdy".
