Great Trades at the Time…but now Regrets

Postby TheTroll » Sat Jan 20, 2024 5:13 am

So we have threads for in season trades, Off season deals and bad trade offers. Let’s start one for deals we have made in the last 2 years that we thought were good.great at the time but turned out to be clunkers for one reason or another.

For me it was mid September 2023 when I needed SR help and traded away Kyren Williams for Calvin Ridley. Who would know at the time Williams would ball out basically all season long and Ridley would boom or bust.

I did a deal in 1QB salary cap right before the season that is too complicated to explain. The key thing (now) is that I sold ETN low. I thought he would be a trap back with low TD equity and that there was little to no reason to think his passing game involvement would improve with the return of Engram and the addition of Ridley. Boy was that wrong. Big regrets.

However part of the deal was the 2023 2.01 in a mixed rookie/devy draft. I took Nabers. Nabers wasn't nearly as "elite" a prospect as he is now. In that draft MHJR, Egbuka, Sanders, Singleton, Edwards, Judkins all went ahead of him.

This deal nets down to ETN ($13,2) for Nabers ($4,4) in 2024. So my regret has faded.

Shows why we should be careful about judging trades in dynasty. We can't really predict the future.

SF league. Sold Love + Swift, got Tlaw back. Recall it being end of September, and seemed reasonable at the time. Now Love looks top 5-8 ish, and Tlaw declining.

Different league also SF, sold Purdy + some flex player, got what turned out to be 1.03. Now this can still end up being even trade, but currently Purdy looks very solid.

Lol I was thinking of making a thread like this:

Both of these trades were for team #3 in signature, so in the end I did win the championship this year (back to back with a bonus pot won). I'm also not sure if I regret them for 2023 but going into 2024 I definitely do lol:

Trade #1
Give: Jordan Love
Receive: 2.01 (2023), A Jones, Nuk

Date; April 7 2023 (pre NFL draft, also pre-aaron Rodgers trade)

My thoughts at the time:
I was not confident in love. Rodgers was still on the packers and while I had Rodgers rostered and was pretty certain he would move on, it wasn't 100% yet. My team was also in need of rbs with James Conner and mostert my only rbs of note. I looked at this trade as getting some depth at wr and a starting RB for basically free.

For 2023 having Jones helped me, and while I suffered losses at QB with Watson and Rodgers and lower than expected production with mahommes I was able to cobble together a trade for Stafford that helped me win.

As of right now I wish I had Love on roster.

So what did I do with that 2.01? I also had the 1.14 and with those two picks I drafted laporta and charbs back to back. While I technically drafted la porta at 1.14 and charbs at 2.01 I had charbs ahead of la porta and only did that to emphasize that I drafted la porta in the first round because I saw him as someone easier to trade.

Onto trade #2: this one I have much more regret.

Send: La porta, Conners, j Williams
Receive: Kelce
Date: may 19th (post fantasy rookie draft)

My thoughts at a time. I wanted to win back to back and get the bonus pot. My TEs had always been pieced together in this league (2ppr for TEs) and my starting options were: Shultz (new team), Ferguson (who I liked but Dallas had just drafted schoon), Thomas (can't stay healthy) and la porta (liked him but rookie). So I make a move sending essentially players I had acquired for 2 late firsts and a late second over the past two years for Kelce. Beginning of the season Kelce was looking good. La porta came on strong and was consistent. Looking at 2023 this deal was probably even, but no way I consider this deal anything but a loss looking at 2024 and beyond.

What I learned:
Atleast this this league, my moves during the off season were poorer than my trades during the regular season.

During the season I did the following to address holes:
Send: Doubbs, my 2024 1st (ended up being 1.14)
Receive: Kenneth walker
Date: Oct 27

My thoughts: I needed starting RB help drastically. Mostert was cooking on all cylinders but he always had health problems. Jones was out, and my other rbs were being cobbled together. With having charbs on my roster acquiring KW3 had even more upside as I already had the backup.

Send: Jeff Wilson, my 2024 2nd(2.14)
Receive: Stafford
Date: Nov 19

My thoughts: I had just lost Watson and while he wasn't doing amazing, in a 14 team SF with start 10 I needed another QB. Browning and Flacco were of course pickups for me that I could use but one injury to mahommes and that would seal my year. So I went out and got Stafford off of a non contending team. I got him cheap imo too.

Tldr: made two trades during last off season that at the time looked good, ended up okay for 2023 season but probably pretty bad for 2024 and beyond. Made much better trades during the 2023 season that saved my season.

For sure.

Also - there were likely a lot of "bad" trades involving Love.

In my 1QB SC league where at the time I had a healthy Lamar/Cousins, I included Love as a throw in the week JJ got hurt:
Gave: DJ Moore, Ridley, Love
Got: JJ and Garoppolo (who I cut the minute after I accepted the trade)
Overall I don't care for obvious reasons.

Deep Superflex league, and I was in need of a QB2. Sold DJ Moore (who I've probably been higher on than anybody) for Dotson and 1.08, despite being low on Dotson because I'd pre-cooked a deal to move 1.08 for Daniel Jones.

Dotson and DJones both look like potential fodder, and Moore does what I always knew he could with a remotely good QB. Ouch.

This could turn. '24 is the last gasp for both of them however.

14 team 2 QB:

Headed into last off season with question marks at QB. After Herbert, it was Purdy coming back from injury, unproven Love, unproven Howell….

Love’s value increased after the Rodgers saga and I saw my opportunity to sell for a value increase off a player I drafted in the 12th of a startup and sat on for years.

Traded him for devy 1.3 and 2.3. I knew players available at 1.3, so I liked this. Also, there was a player I REALLY wanted.

Traded back from 1.3 while OTC, and got 1.7 and 24 devy 2. Got the player I absolutely wanted in Nico. So for now it’s:

Love
For
Nico Iamaleava (Tennessee QB who’s 1st start was 4 TDs against Iowa in the bowl game), Justice Haynes (should be Alabama starting RB), and whomever I take this year.

Many years for this to play out but it looks quite bad at the moment. To add insult to injury, because my 2nd QB slot was a mess I traded for Mahomes mid season and gave up Bowers, Nabers, and more in the process. Had I just kept Love, QB2 would be set, and I’d still have them and the additional picks coming. RIP

Similar one for me, before the 2023 season started:

Finally sold my disappointing son Jerry Jeudy.
Incredibly, got Jordan Addison back.

So far, so good. But I was still at roster crunch, and was also feeling like I was winning the deal.

"Would you like me to throw in Tank Dell as well? I'm not sure I can fit him... you never know, CJ Stroud might be good!"

Just discovered this one from one of my leagues, superflex.

Gave Tua/2023 1.04/2023 1.10
Got Allen/Kupp

1.04 he took Stroud, 1.10 he took Kincaid

Felt like a home run at the time. I guess getting the third QB off the board in that rookie draft (Stroud) canceled out getting a stud in Josh Allen.

After the August 2023 startup draft, but before week 1, I traded away Deshaun Watson, CJ Stroud, and Elijah Moore for Trevor Lawrence, Treylon Burks, and a 24 3rd. 12 team SF TEP PPR league.

I was not a Stroud believer, I passed on him at 1.05 and 1.06 in two rookie drafts, and only took him in this startup because he fell to 4.08, which I thought his value was too good to pass up.
TLaw was pick 1.06 in the startup, my pick was 1.08, and I took Chase, and Watson in round 2.

Now my QB room in this league is TLaw and Russ Wilson. :wall:
