2024 Wild Card Weekend

Postby Shcritters » Sat Jan 13, 2024 6:21 am

Might as well continue it into the post-season.

Have at it!

Imagine being Miami and going from potentially hosting 2 playoff games in 70 degree weather to having to play in -30F windchill game in KC. That doesn’t sound pleasant.

Forcing KC/MIA to play the night game is downright stupid bordering on dangerous to both fans and players. It’s unconscionable IMO that the network (Peacock no less) is controlling this issue. The NFL seems hellbent on doing more and more to piss traditional fans off, but this decision goes beyond the pale.

And this comes from a GB fan who is well steeped in the legend that is the Ice Bowl and went to the GB/TB snow game (which was a blast!). But with less and less common sense in the world, I’m not sure that some fans and players don’t need to be protected a bit more against their own bad judgment.

I am ignorant but it seems bizarre that a network would control whether or not a game is played due to weather conditions. Is this what you're saying? I would figure that this would be an NFL executive decision.

Side note, my wife (Bills fan) got tickets to the Bills game, club seats no less. So at least I won't be in the wind/snow this weekend... until we walk to and from the stadium.

Congrats on the tickets! Have a blast.

Back to the first point, what other reason can there be that the NFL wouldn't have switched game times of the 2 Saturday games knowing that KC was going to be hit with a Polar Vortex if it wasn’t because Peacock wanted (contracted) the game in prime time? I’m sitting in Nebraska right now and we’re looking -13 temps and wind chills close to -50 during the game - and we’re 5 hrs from KC. Afternoon temps and wind chills aren’t much better, but they are better.

That sounds a little far fetched. Peacock is streaming, it’s not like some big programming interruption if they move the game. The people who are gonna watch the game will watch it whatever day/time. If the NFL wanted to move it they would have

So I’ll ask again. Given the severe temperature conditions and knowing this has been coming in for at least 3-4 days, why wouldn’t the NFL move the KC/MIA game to the afternoon game? And don’t tell me prime time games aren’t more lucrative financially to networks - that’s nonsense.

How would I know that? But I will say that there are a lot of logistics in play beyond network programming that matter quite a lot to moving games around last minute. And sure, prime time is prime time, but playoffs is playoffs, they’re not gonna lack for viewership.

But look they just moved the Buffalo game back, due to snow and such. Cold doesn’t make travel more dangerous than precipitation, and the governor’s office etc weighed in heavily there.

All I’m saying is laying this at the feet of a network deal seems short sighted to me. I’d venture that maybe your bone to pick lies with the fact that this game is behind a paywall at all. Times are changing. Keep up or don’t, but yelling into the wind won’t change much

I love it! I hate the playoff games that come on at 8am Hawaii time. It's right in the middle of my surfing window.

They don't seem to care about cold. I was at the Titans / Pats playoff game in 2004. They could have moved it to a day game but didn't. At kick-off it was 4 degrees, windchill -10. Coldest game in Patriots history. Beer and water froze nearly instantly when you put it on the ground. They quickly shut down all concessions except bottled water. Probably one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life.

It’s about the fans, stadium workers, and emergency response workers. Strains on medical response and nearby areas with that many people trying to get to the game.
