Diontae Johnson or Jameson Williams

Postby jobiegermano » Thu Oct 26, 2023 11:10 am

Signature is up-to-date, trying to repeat, in win now mode…

What do you think of this analysis from one of the sites I frequent?..

“Jameson Williams combines elite athleticism with prototypical size and was on my sleeper list this summer. He showed a glimpse of his talent with an incredible touchdown catch vs Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, the windy conditions last week in Baltimore were not ideal for the vertical passing game. However, the Lions’ favorable schedule, as well as an increased workload, gives me grounds for optimism. WHO WOULD YOU GIVE UP FOR JAMESON WILLIAMS? Jahan Dotson, Diontae Johnson, Terry McLaurin, DeAndre Hopkins, or Terry McLaurin. Ringo’s comps- Jameson Williams reminds me of a poor man’s Randy Moss. He’s that explosive and a potential league winner if given a chance imo.”

Williams has the hope but it is fading very quickly. I get he has all the tools, but he has shown zero so far in the NFL. I don't like Johnson at all as an asset moving forward, but he is a safer flex play than Williams if you had to start either.

I think my hope is that I get to start CMC, Henry, Monty, KA, and Puka as my baseline RB/WR/Flex set. I truly believe (admitting I’m a Steelers homer) that DJ is poised to see an increase in TDs due to regression from last year, but for the most part I expect him to be a steady high floor, dependable player without any expectations of him being a league winner… he’s just 8-10 points a week kind of guy. JW is the boom or bust guy that I think when he booms it will blow DJ’s points out of the water. So maybe the better question is, would I rather have a consistent solid slightly above average depth piece or a risky dart throw with high ceiling potential depth piece?

Jameson is an elite WR with bad hands.

Make of that what you will, but I think he has way too many drops to ever become a legit WR.
Perhaps he can be trained to focus better, but usually WR's with bad hands don't get much better.

That’s ironic because I’m fairly certain DJ led the league in drops last year or the year before, right?

Diontae already has a WR1 season under his belt, is entering the age apex for WRs and had 3 straight seasons of being an absolute target magnet.

Above average flex play is his floor not his ceiling.

Yes, DJ led the NFL in drops in 2021, but I don't think DJ was ever 21 targets 5 catches bad.
That is Jameson through 9 games. 24% catch percentage versus targets for Jameson career.

In 2021, DJ caught 107 of 189 targets, a 63% catch percentage.

On the whole I'd prefer to own DJ.

However if neither of these guys is going to start for you (which is entirely possible) I can see wanting JAMO for the upside potential. DJ is a low end WR2 which we need on FF teams. JAMO could be more than that - which we "want" on FF teams.

Overall I like the higher floor of DJ.

I don’t see the appeal for Jameson. Even if he becomes a good NFL WR (which I’m not convinced, maybe he will maybe he won’t). What is his fantasy upside? ARSB will always be the target monster. LaPorta has established himself. I don’t see Jameson being more than 2-3 in the pecking order. And that’s ignoring Gibbs. I guess with his potential usage, IF he becomes good, he will certainly have some boom weeks…but on a year-to-year basis it is hard to see him as more than a WR3 personally. And that’s assuming everything goes right for him.

Give me Diontae.
