Pacheco for Michael Wilson & a 3rd? (salaries & contracts involved)

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Pacheco for Michael Wilson & a 3rd? (salaries & contracts involved)

Postby M-Dub » Tue Oct 17, 2023 7:59 pm

Team 2 in sig. 12 team 1QB league. Start 8. Salary cap/contract league, so that makes things a little more complicated.

I’ve been offered Michael Wilson and a 2024 3rd for Pacheco. In a “normal” dynasty this would obviously be an easy pass, but Pacheco is only under contract for one more year after this season at $2. Wilson is on a 5-year deal, also at $2, so I’d have him at that salary for four more years. I’m in a rebuild, so not really trying to compete this year, but there is a consolation tournament for the 1.13, so this deal would likely hinder my chances at winning that.

Thoughts?

Even with the contracts factoring in, I would keep shopping.

Offer is now Wilson and a 2025 2nd. He doesn’t have any 2nds in 2024 and no 1sts whatsoever, so this is probably his best offer. Still a pass?

FWIW, I already have three 2nds in 2024 and two 1sts and three 2nds in 2025. I may be overly optimistic, but I kinda feel like this team could compete as early as next year if I jettison some of the aging roster cloggers and add an elite free agent or two in the 2024 FA auction.

I play in SC (best format BTW) so I understand the nuance on the contract.

I was leaning toward saying to do the deal until you said you think you can compete next year. If you believe that, Pacheco is a hold for sure. He's likely going to be ranked as a low end RB2 in '24 redraft. On a $2 contract that's a player I want on my contender regardless of the duration.

You know your league, but how realistic is it that this team can contend? I wouldn't feel good about that WR group in a 12-team league. None of those guys is better than a low end WR2.

Realistically, 2025 is probably the more likely year for this team to compete, but the salary cap/contract settings have created a pretty significant degree of parity in this league.

Agree that WR is probably my biggest weakness other than TE, but I should have a pretty nice chunk of cap space to address that in the offseason. Pretty much every elite WR besides Chase will be available. Most of the super high-end players only get signed for a year, or two at most, just due to the cap hit incurred from dropping someone (40% of their salary multiplied by the number of years remaining on their deal). I’m probably gonna just cut Sutton and Chig outright and eat the cap hits just to get them off the books for next year. Nuk and Cook will be gone too, so that should give me enough to sign at least one elite player and maybe another low-end WR1 type.

I get it. Things change much faster in SC - it's kind of half way b/w dynasty and redraft. I like it for that reason. Keeps everyone in the game.

If you think you have shot at contending in '24, I'd hold Pacheco. He's probably worth more in terms of his production than his trade value. Folks won't pay up for him because they think he's got a short leash due to low draft capital.

Maybe the move is to hold him until after your FA auction. If you are excited about your team, great. If not there should still be a market in the '24 preseason for a RB who will likely be top-24 in redraft preseason ranks.

Offer is now Wilson and TWO 2025 2nds. I’m starting to think I need to take this…

I pulled the trigger on it. The value was just too good to pass up.

Sounds like you are happy with the deal long term. Lots of money in Brown and Sutton I noticed. Could be an issue long term.

Yeah. I’ve been shopping Sutton around just to see if I can basically give him away, but so far no takers. I just dropped Cook, so worst case, I have enough cap space to cut Sutton and Chig outright. The deadline to cut players on multiyear deals is before the start of week 8. Still not sure what to do about Hollywood. I may just hang onto him if I can’t trade him.
