Practice Squad advice

Postby Cojo 2020 » Tue Aug 22, 2023 7:35 pm

They way the practice squad works in the league from my signature is:

-Only rookies selected in our rookie draft can be added to the practice squad (undrafted rookies taken as free agents are ineligible and can only be added to the starter/reserve roster).
-We have 12 practice squad spots (our rookie draft is a 6 round draft)
-Players may stay on the practice squad indefinitely, but once they are moved off for any reason (including IR), they may never return to the PS.
-Managers may trade a player from their practice squad to another manager's practice squad, and vice versa.

I need advice about who to leave on my practice squad this season. Because of the rules, it would ideally be players you don't plan on using during the season. At times it is necessary to elevate a practice squad player, but I try not to do that unless I plan on starting them at some point, since a vacated PS spot is typically left vacant until after the following year's draft (barring a PS to PS trade).

We start 11 players, have 13 reserve, 12 PS, and up to 4 IR.

Here are my current reserve players who are on the bubble of being cut due to our roster cut day that is approaching.

*Trey Lance QB/SF
*Malik Davis RB/DAL
*D'Ernest Johnson RB/JAX
*Keaton Mitchell RB/BAL
*Deneric Prince RB/KC
*Marquez Callaway WR/DEN
*Rashid Shaheen WR/NO

Here is my current PS of 18 players, which will need to be brought down to 12. I don't really want to cut anyone here, so the question is which 6 players do I elevate for this season? If I elevate 6 from the PS, then I have to cut 6 of the 7 reserves listed about. So who would you keep from that list with the 6 elevated PS players? Or would you keep more of the reserves and let some PS guys get cut?

Practice Squad
*Malik Cunningham QB/NE
*Jake Haener QB/NO
*Anthony Richardson QB/IND
*Bryce Young QB/CAR
*A.J. Dillon RB/GB
*Zach Evans RB/LAR
*Jahmyr Gibbs RB/DET
*Roschon Johnson RB/CHI
*Bijan Robinson RB/ATL
*Tyjae Spears RB/TEN
*Zamir White RB/LV
*Kayshon Boutte WR/NE
*Jahan Dotson WR/WAS
*Romeo Doubs WR/GB
*Quentin Johnston WR/LAC
*Elijah Moore WR/CLE
*Jaxson Smith-Njigba WR/SEA
*Dalton Kincaid TE/BUF

Thanks for the advice!

Can you mix and match between the two groups? If so, there are options in both sets of players.

I can put PS on reserve, but I can NOT put reserves back on the PS. So I would have to cut a reserve to make room for the PS player. I am currently 6 players over limit on PS, so I have to make room for 6 on reserve, but making cuts.

Way too much nuance involved, would be helpful to pare down your options. Unclear if you’re contending, trying to stash good young players in an attempt to tank, or something in between.

I think your QBs on your practice squad are long shots but if you would rather hold your youth, the easiest path I see is holding Lance just in case and letting all your other reserves go. Shaheed is tough to let go and Davis may do something, but overall, I don't think you miss any of them and this allows you to keep all your youth/rookies.

What does your roster look like besides this? This will determine what cuts are.

In a vacuum, I'd be looking to elevate Bijan, Gibbs, Dillon, and Kincaid.

I would cut Haener and Cunningham.

From reserves, I would cut Callaway, Mitchell, Davis, and Johnson.
12 team, 35 man rosters, 1/2 PPR, 10 round rookie/FA draft
Qb: Geno Smith, Matthew Stafford, Trey Lance
Rb: Jonathan Taylor, Joe Mixon, Austin Ekeler, Saquon Barkley, Cam Akers, Isiah Pacheco, Jeff Wilson, Chase Edmonds, Pierre Strong, Jordan Mason, Jaleel McLaughlin
Wr: DeAndre Hopkins, Mike Evans, Diontae Johnson, Darnell Mooney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jakobi Meyers, Laviska Shenault, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Denzel Mims, Richie James, Michael Wilson, Demario Douglas, Trent Sherfield
Te: George Kittle, Darren Waller, Taysom Hill, Isaiah Likely

D: Dallas D
