Yeah I heard that too. Could be a little of both, wanting to do right by the QB and the team. My guess is that this is what probably caused the GM to wait so long. Anyhow, it’s done and the bears aren’t worse because they have the 1.01. Most teams who have to move on from a 1st rd QB don’t have that luxury. The mistake lingers on for a few years.

I heard from an inside the best offer we got was a 4th and future 5th, and they waited too long, positions got taken, people made trades. Oh well. Look forward to Williams and hopefully Odunze at #9.

I don't understand the fan loyalty to a guy for no good reason, from so many Bears fans. Not only wasn't he good, but he made some less than savoury comments about the fan base at times, and seemed to place blame elsewhere (coaches, fans etc)

You have to understand our QBs historically have been bad. The best I've seen? Mitch and Cutler. JFC. Fields was a chance. He got royally screwed his first year, weren't sure what we had. Year two didn't surround him with much more. Third year, DJM, Fields flashed some greatness. We SHOULD have won 10 games. I seriously think if we didn't have the #1 pick we'd still have Fields at the helm. Here's hoping Williams is everything the experts SAY he is.

I think everyone understands the Bears have had a run of bad QBs. What we (I) don't understand is why Bears fans refuse to acknowledge Fields IS a bad QB. Bears fans seem to keep saying Fields is a good QB who (insert one of five rotating reasons) did not get a fair chance to show how good he is. I know a couple of Bears fans irl and they can't keep saying Fields is a good QB who was misused.

No, Fields is a bad QB. Chicago is lucky to have the 1.01 with which to replace Fields, but if the front office is competent, they would have had a non-Fields QB1 going into 2024 anyway. Fields IS NOT the answer, unless the question is "how can a team have a good chance to produce a losing season?"

Good luck with those two first round picks. This could be a transformative draft for Chicago.

Fields was good... except for one thing.... holding the ball forever... if he could throw guys open, he would be the second coming.. sigh... in any other era, he would be a RB.... which is what he should be in this era... or a wr.

As much as I dislike the Packers, watching them over the years has shown how sacks are just as much a QB stat as it is a line stat. Rodgers would always put his line in a position to succeed and knew what would be open before the snap.

Fields never seemed to grasp this and really struggled with it. He could make amazing plays to make up for his struggles. Hopefully the next QB can do better!

Why did people defend Fields?

1. He was an exciting pick and held more promise than any QB since Mitch or Cutler. So, we were invested.
2. Many (including myself) weren't sure year 1 if it was him or bad OL/WR or bad scheme. It was both.
3. Year three didn't do much to support him aside from coaching.
4. This was the year we hoped he'd step up, year three, and he DID improve in many ways.
5. It just wasn't enough. Sacks, fumbles, missing open guys.

One of the biggest flaws talked about with Fields before his draft was his processing speed. It wasn’t that he held the ball for too long but rather that he didn’t process the ongoing play, read where his receivers would be and how the D was positioned, and be able to anticipate quickly enough, so that he wouldn’t get the ball out of his hand quickly enough because he had to see his receiver come open before he would throw. It’s a fatal flaw in the NFL for becoming a successful long term starter.

One of Caleb Williams’ biggest flaws? Processing speed.
