Baby Sproles? Jaleel McLaughlin

Postby jman3134 » Wed Aug 02, 2023 11:42 pm

Now that I just finished my draft, I think it is time to bring up Jaleel McLaughlin, who is tearing up camp in Denver (I have been waiting two years to create this thread). He flew under the radar coming from a small school, but is the NCAA's all time rusher. I have been tracking him for the last two years (can provide receipts), but this is a discount name you are going to want to scoop up pre-preseason. Obviously, the size profile is not ideal, but he should make the roster and then we will see what happens from there.

The name is gaining traction on Sleepers trending. I had to look him up personally. All-time leading rusher in NCAA history, but is on the small side. I doubt he beats out Perine, but he could beat out Badie/other unknowns.

I heard Denver like's him. Fast with decent hands. Could carve out a roll as the RB2/3 on the team? Fell due to size. I grabbed him to see how he fairs in training camp.
Cecil Lammey is drooling over him. Kiss of Death applied. Seek RBs elsewhere.
Damit you are right. He is drooling over him.

He has incredibly poor athletic metrics across the board. Given how small he is and that he’s from such a small program, being a 15th percentile or lower athlete is not a recipe for success. Let’s see what happens when the pads go on and they are full speed. I don’t know if he’s good enough to overcome Cecil Lammey’s endorsement either.

Not sure who that is, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I don't know what his RAS is, but I imagine it isn't the best factoring his weight. I don't think it is just one beat reporter saying positive things, but again, it will depend what he does on special teams and how he plays in the game. When it comes to the game of football, he is an outlier imo. Available for nothing. We will see.

Also, never read that article, it is just an obvious comp given an outlier in a Sean Payton O.

If there’s a coach in the league willing to give him a chance it’s Payton. People say Sproles…but look at the number of impactful UDFA Payton had. Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, mike Bell, others
SF, PPR, 12 team, 12 player dynasty

QB- Lawrence, Fields, Tannehill (max 2 keepers, 3 rostered)
RB- Bijan Robinson, T Pollard, Allgeier, Charbonnet, Achane, J Wilson, Kelley, K Williams
WR- Lamb, Jeudy, Hill, C Olave, A Pierce, Shaheed, Bourne
TE- Goedert, Musgrave

Let's say he becomes exactly what Sproles was.

Why do you want him? Sproles had ONE good year for fantasy in his whole career.

Sproles was a pretty good flex or better from 2010-2013.

If you told me there was a scat back who's essentially free in leagues where that's a possibility, I think everyone would be lining up to get them. I don't know if it's this player specifically though, but who knows.

I'd disagree he was playable from 2010-2013. But let's assume for a second he was. He started in 2005. So you'd have had to hang onto him for 5 years before he became playable as a flex.

No thanks.

And as you hint at, this dude has a long way to go before we even know of he can scratch the surface of being a Sproles.

There's just way better lotto tickets there to roster.

He was averaging over 70 receptions a year during that span. Unless you were strictly playing in Standard leagues or very shallow formats, he most certainly was at least fantasy relevant.

But his rushing was crap. And again, even if I conceded he was say an RB3 during those 3 years, was that worth holding him on your roster for his first 5 years when he did squat? No, no it isn't.

At best, Sproles was a nice WW pick up you could flex for a couple years. Nobody drafted him and then talked bleep about their scouting skills.

PPR:

2009: RB26
2010: RB30
2011: RB5
2012: RB12
2013: RB24
2014: RB25
2015: RB28

You make a good point that you would've had to hold onto him for five years to get that, but that's still really good production:

- Two RB1 seasons
- Three T-24 seasons
- Three seasons as a upside flex player
