SF Start-up Help Welcomed

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

SF Start-up Help Welcomed

Postby tstafford » Sun Jul 23, 2023 2:02 am

Folks,

I have an SF start-up beginning tomorrow AM. This is the first start-up I've done in quite a while plus it is a league with a handful of well-known analysts. Given that I am coming to the board for assistance. As the draft progresses I am going to post questions in this thread. I welcome your input as the collective wisdom of this group is incredible.

Thanks in advance if you are willing to help.

Best,
Tim

While I think the best approach is to let the draft come to me, I would prefer to play for the future vs. "win-now". For example I'd like to acquire some future firsts during the start-up. I have the 1.05 and all subsequent picks in a snake.

First question: What would you do with the 1.05 pick?
- Use the pick and take whatever QB falls - guessing Burrow or Herbert
- Trade back a couple of spots to take a QB like Lawrence (what would you ask for in a pick trade?)
- Trade back further and take BPA regardless of position (what would you ask for in a pick trade?)

I'm leaning to the second choice. If I thought Burrow was likely to be there I'd stay put but I don't like Herbert any more than either Lawrence or L.Jax and only slightly more than Fields. Feels like offering a package to the guys with the 1.07, 1.08 and 1.09 might be the play.

You really can’t go wrong at 1.05 but if you truly want to play for the future I like the option 2 and trade back a few spots for Lawrence. I’m guessing you should be able to get a future 1st

I think most have Lawrence and Herbert in the same tier at this point. If you could get a future 1st added snap accept. If you can't, aim for a 2nd and be happy.

Don't like trading out of the elite QB tier, too risky even if you add a ton of future capital.

If you are looking for a future build, Burrow or Lawrence would be the play for me with your 1st rounder. Trading back is great on value but risky and I would not want to lose either depending on what direction you go.

Thanks guys I offered deals to both the 1.07 and 1.08 teams and neither bit. Going to just pick best QB available at 1.05.

How do folks feel about Lawrence vs. Herbert? (I'm leaning Lawrence).
(L.Jax will be an option too - not so interested)

I'm a Jags fan, sooooo you can take my opinion ad unbiased, but Lawrence for me. New OC in LA gives us all hope Herbert will be unlocked though...

I would try and trade back to take Lawrence (I did that in my last startup SF league) and I ended up trading back from 1.4 (where Hurtz was taken) to 1.8 to take Lawrence. By trading back I was able to move from 2.9 up to 2.5, move from 4.9 up to 3.8, move from 5.4 to 4.5, and move up from 10.9 up to 10.5. I am very happy with my team after all was said and done.

Offer on table:
Give: 1.05 start up pick
Get: 1.12 start up pick and 2024 1st

Accept, reject or counter? I'm inclined to reject.

id prob do it and just take watson or young or one of jj chase bijan

this falls in line with your plan and i think anything prior to 1.10 isnt likely to net you much in a move back

I see your point. It's going to be a pretty solid player plus the pick. Not that I put a ton of faith in it but the trade analyzer likes the deal for me.

I don’t think it’s horrible, but I don’t think I’d have done it. If looking at through a QB lens, this is roughly Herbert for Dak or Watson plus a random 1st. Where that 1st ends up landing will weigh this heavily. If early, I’d like it. Mid…eh. Late, don’t like it at all. But maybe I’m high on Herbert.

And I’m assuming this was done before the draft. If for whatever reason Mahomes, Allen, Hurts, or Burrow was there at 1.05, I like it even less.

I’m good with the trade but don’t love it as much if you plan on picking a qb at 12. I’d cascade that and keep sliding down. If you are picking a qb at 12 you’re taking a major down tier there for a 1st. Big gap between herbert and whoever you would take there.
Keep trading back and acquiring future 1sts/extra picks later.
