You’ve won employee of the year a couple times. Your company has won company of the year. After this, you watch them get rid of some of your coworkers, who you considered family, and they tell you, “We need you to step it up more.” They then bring in unqualified coworkers. You’re still trying to be the super star.

Then, one year, they hire your replacement. You’re confused as they didn’t say a word to you about it. Not only did they hire your replacement, they don’t have money/just didn’t hire people to help you out with the extra load you have. You win employee of the year again the next year. Then, you did it again the year after that. The next year, they get rid of the only coworker you have left whom you have a strong bond with. Not just that, you’ve worked together for nearly a decade and know how to do it in unison. What does management do for you? Hire a college drop out to replace your beloved coworker, that they *think* could be a good employee a few years down the line. You’re say…3 years away from retirement. How do you feel?
I like this story…mind if I add in some more detail to the narrative?
After your company wins “company of the year,” a bunch of the employees all want more money and find higher paying bids with other companies. This is standard in the business. You know that your company can’t retain guys that want to leave for more money, and you know after a bunch of employees all showing high numbers, your company simply can’t afford all your buddies, or hold them against their will. Don’t worrry, you’ll be getting paid more too. You decide to hold bitter feelings anyways that your buddies were driven out of town, perhaps even had to dig their own grave in a cornfield.
You’re a top performer not just for the company, but in the industry. The company brings in an understudy to learn from you, and you’re heavily offended. You know your position in the company is the most crucial role to fill and if you were to miss time the company would have a disastrous year without someone adequate backing you up…and you admit to yourself that you kinda ARE seeming a little iffy around the office and your name has been in the news where it doesn’t need to be…but HOW DARE THEY have a backup plan for my flaky behavior?! I’m the employee of the year!!
Anyways, they give me an extension in my contract and raise to show their commitment to me, if I’m committed to them. Whatever. I’ll take the money but I’m holding my bitterness…because you wouldn’t believe what happens next.
I’ve got this buddy at work, a BIG part of my productivity, we just have a chemistry together. He’s admittedly a great employee on his own, but he really does make my job easier. So what happens with a company like mine, that just seems to hate me and make my life difficult? They booted the guy out of town!! Ok what really happened was my buddy was tired of being known for just the guy working under/alongside my success, and he ASKED for a transfer to get away from….I dunno…maybe he doesn’t like the water here or something. Anyways, he asked for a transfer, the company offered him MORE money than where he wanted to go, and he turned it down, wanted out, and they LET HIM!! HOW DARE THEY, I say again!
So what do they do next? They sign a young kid to replace my buddy, like that could ever happen. I’m not wasting my time developing chemistry with these other employees. This is bogus. And then get this…when I show up for work and try to get the office humming, these guys DON’T anticipate my actions! No chemistry. What a miserable company. I gotta get out.

What’s funny is a lot of that actually lines up with some of the guys I’ve worked with getting near to retirement.

I'm old enough to remember when Aaron Rodgers said:

"Anything in this building that we're doing that has nothing to do with winning needs to be assessed," Rodgers said. "Everything that we do has to have a purpose ... the (expletive) that has nothing to do with winning has to get out of the building."

He was referring to the election. Obviously.

I just can't see Rodgers doing this. As a spectator, it would absolutely be fascinating, but what benefit is there to wasting your time on a campaign that has zero chance of winning.
