Championship Game Bad Beat Question

Postby joekuhns11 » Tue Jan 03, 2023 5:45 am

Championship Game in our league.

I had: Burrow & Chase playing
OP had: Higgins playing

At the time of injury last night, I was down 2 points. If the NFL does decide to cancel the game and call it a tie do I make a case that I should have won because obviously Burrow & Chase outscore Higgins. Or do I lose because the score is what it is and I just got hosed.
Team #1 (Finished 2nd)

RB - Hall, Jacobs, Mixon
WR - Tyreek, Jefferson, Chase, Jayden Reed, Cooper
TE - Goedert, Kmet

Team #2 (Finished 1st)
QB - Tua, Pickett
RB - Hall, Barkley, K. Walker, James Cook

Your league should have rules in place related to covid cancellation/postponement of games. Follow those rules.

If you are looking for a suggestion if you don't have rules in place, call the game a draw and send any money to Hamlin's charitable foundations (is his toy drive or anything else that he does).

The score is what it is.

Most likely you would have won - but it is not 100% impossible, that BUF would have shut Chase completely down (like happened to JJ Sunday) and Higgins received all targets and 3 TDs (like Evans did Sunday).

Both leagues I’m in this is creating a fairly major problem. The NFL was scheduling pretty tight with COVID last couple year,s so I suspect they’ll figure out a way to get this game played. A lot of playoff implications to it.

At the end of the day I am not worrying about the impact of the suspension of the game. Once a decision is made, then the discussion can occur.

They'll play the game I'm sure
But if not, then no, you definitely can't declare yourself the winner when you were in fact losing.
Either your opponent wins or it's declared a draw.

You always risk a game getting cancelled whether for covid or for weather or an earthquake or power outage etc. Imo, if the game doesn’t get played - which seems likely it won’t - then scores stand as is. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else in any of my leagues.

From what I have seen others say, if you want to resolve things amicably, the person in the lead is declared the winner but also maybe the winner considers splitting the pot if the contest was in doubt. I think that is a sporting way to handle it. At the same time, I’m of the opinion that it sucks but also injuries and other things happen all the time and the loser doesn’t get compensation. So if you can’t resolve things amicably as described above then the result should simply stand, whatever it may be. If the game wasn’t close then I would say it just is what it is. Obviously this is assuming the game is not resumed this week, which it doesn’t seem likely it would be with Hamlin’s health still tenuous.

It is hard since every game is different. Assuming the game doesn't happen this week, there are a couple of options I see:

Clearly if there are no players from the MNF game in the active line-ups, then it really doesn't matter.

If someone is down say 50 points and the only player they have left is a Kicker, then the team up by 50 is the winner.

If it is close (and I am not sure what "close" is), then draw and the first/second place pot is split evenly. Or you could use the active players average PPG to get a winner.

I am only in one league and I just checked the bylaws, there is nothing written in there about what happens with a game that doesn't get played. I also can't remember a game that got postponed like this after the game had started. I am pretty sure any Covid games were cancelled before kickoff. Maybe really bad weather has caused something like this before? But most of the time the game continues after the weather issues blow over.

I think another fair resolution if the game is cancelled is to use the week 18 stats from all players in question.

Either that or call it a tie.

I have a league where I’m up by 20 points with Higgins. I’m playing my buddy who has Josh Allen and Mixon. I’m a do-commish of this league and will be suggesting either of those resolutions.

While at the end of the day its not that big of a deal, I think the most fair thing to do is to go back to the pre-game projections and use that to swap in the players for the ones impacted. I know some leagues did similar to that for last minute covid

In reality every league will have to discuss this, it'll be easier with tight knit leagues of friends, and more complicated with random leagues with big $$ pots

Need to see if the game gets played or not.

If not, why wouldn't the scores just stand? Seems like players are surprise inactives, exit during the middle of the game, etc. We have the stuff happen all the time. (Ex. Kamara in the London game earlier this season) This is a new example, but we all know that sometimes players don't end up playing.

Note: In my case handling this way will cause me to lose. And I'm good with that.

Thoughts are with D.Hamlin.

I’ve got two leagues where this is an issue. Close matchups where we probably know who will win but clearly anything could’ve happened. We have discussed the waiting on a reschedule, making it a two week final with week 18 added on, using week 18 stats, or just calling it a draw. At the end of the day we will give it a few days for a r/s or call it a draw
