Should there be Divisions in Dynasty Football?

I am in a 12 team league and currently we do 3 divions of 4 teams each (14 week regular season). What are your preferences as far as the best setup? 2,3, or 4 divions? I've been really thinking about moving my league to 4 divisions and having 2 wild card teams. I've also thought about having a couple of weeks where we have double headers, so that we could possibly have a 16 week regular season.

Feedback?

We have 1 division. Top 6 teams get in. There's no chance of a weaker team getting in because they won their division.

I am in 3 -12 team leagues. #1 has 1 twelve team division, #2 has 2 six team divisions, and the third one has three 4 team divisions. All of them have six making the playoffs. All are well run. In option one you play everyone once and 2 random, In option 2 you play your division twice and the rest random, and option 3 you also play your division twice and play teams all but one once. With all them ending in week 16 there is no perfect scheduling. They have all worked well with no major issues.

4 divisions - division winners are NOT guaranteed a playoff spot. Just take the top 6 teams by record.

I have played in 12-team leagues with divisions and without. I saw no major problems with any of the setups.

In my league we have 3 double header weeks. This is so we play 16 games instead of 13. The double-header weeks are always on weeks with no byes and are spaced out as best as possible (so that players who are injured don't miss multiple double-header weeks). This year the double-header weeks were 1,3, and 12.

Everyone in the league loves the double-header week rule. Teams have to be clutch to make sure you don't drop 2 games in one week.

Update:

We have decided to stay at 3 divisions. Our scheduling will be moved from 14 games to 16 games.

Each team will play divisional rivals twice (6 games)
Every non-divisional team once (8)
and the team that finished in the same spot in their division as you finished in yours [IE divisional champs would play each other (2)]

Thanks for the feedback guys!

So, this is a total-points league? Why have divisions then?

What part of my post made you think it was total-points league? It's a 16 game league that will be played over 13 weeks (3 double-headers)

Ahhh. Sorry, didn't catch the first post. Any particular reason why you guys wanted to fit 16 games in there? The double-headers put a lot of emphasis on those three weeks in relation to the other 13. Just curious.

Well, divisions are split up pretty reasonably well. We are starting to grow extreme ends as far as having teams that you can see as the 1,2,3 seed every year and a couple of cellar dwellers. I wanted to add the games that forced div champs to play against the other 2 div champs and the cellar dwellers of each division to get to play the other cellar dwellers again, because it provides a little more competition at each teams level. I have been the 1 seed 3 of the last 4 years. I feel like I should have to play a harder schedule than the team that finishes last.

Divisions Setup

What are the arguments to setting up divisions in a 12 team league and either keeping the divisions the same forever, or changing them up every year...?

Thanks!

Argument against divisions in general is that they exist in real life to make travel easier, which isn't an issue obviously. Adding divisions just adds to the randomness of fantasy.

If you're married to the idea of divisions, one variant I've always wanted to try is we're every year you let the champion and runner up have a draft where they pick the divisions for the next year. Works better for a friends league than with random people online, though.
