Looking Ahead to 2023 - Quarterbacks - Part I

3 years ago I posted a couple of polls to see what DLF Forum members thought were the QBs most likely to still be in the NFL in 2020. One was involving older veterans QBs likely to retire due to age & one was backup QBs under 26 who could wash out.

Due to the pandemic and its effect - I was on hiatus from the Forums in Sept 2020, so never got around to reviewing the results.

Until now.

You can find the results here:

Part II

Here is the list of QBs

Remember the date we were looking for is 2020, so if the player retired after 2020 but prior to today - they were still active in 2020. Players were deemed active if they took 1+ snaps in an NFL Game. Players are deemed retired/inactive if they announced retirement, or did not play a snap.

Sam Bradford - retired end of 2018
Tom Brady - still active
Drew Brees - still active
Case Keenum - still active
Brian Hoyer - still active
Ryan Fitzpatrick - still active
Eli Manning - retired end of 2019
Josh McCown - retired end of 2019
Philip Rivers - still active
Ben Roethlisberger - still active
Alex Smith - still active
Drew Stanton - inactive end of 2017

C.J. Beathard - still active
Teddy Bridgewater - still active
Jacoby Brissett - still active
Connor Cook - inactive end of 2016
Joshua Dobbs - still active
Christian Hackenberg - inactive end of 2016
Brett Hundley - inactive end of 2019
Cardale Jones - inactive end of 2016
Chad Kelly - inactive end of 2018
Cody Kessler - inactive end of 2018
Deshone Kizer - inactive end of 2018
Paxton Lynch - inactive end of 2017
Nathan Peterman - still active
Bryce Petty - inactive end of 2017
Davis Webb - inactive

Here is the new poll(s) - same format - elder statesmen and unknown backups under 26. Which QBs will still be on an NFL team and possibly taking snaps Sept 2023?

Looking ahead more than 2.5 years to the start of the 2023 season - so Sept 2023 (2 years 5 months) which of the following Quarterbacks do you believe will still be in the NFL. Keeping in mind the expected influx of the 2021 class, and then 2 more classes after that:

I do not mean which will still have fantasy value - just which of them do you feel will be on NFL Teams either as a starter or a backup (not practice squad or FA wanting to be on roster).

Pick as many or as few options as you wish. You can change your vote if other owners comments convince you to do so - but honesty and admitting a vote change would be appreciated.

All QBs in Poll 1 are at least 32. They may be starters or backups but all have been starters at some point (ie they were officially a starter for an NFL Game).

Not a ton of players to be optimistic about in 2 years. Rostered (but not necessarily starting) is a low enough bar. Went with Brady, Cam, Rodgers and Ryan. The toughest to leave off were Dalton and Taysom.

Not predicting all of these guys as starters, but the four I think will still be in the league are Hill, Newton, Rodgers, and Ryan.

But wow, just looking at that list shows how much QB turnover is coming our way. Alex Smith is already one we can eliminate.

Well I think that is a first - never had a player retire while a poll was up before haha. Anyways I have removed Alex Smith and replaced with Chad Henne as the pickings of aged 32+ qbs not already on the list was very slim. I guess if you were the lone vote for Alex Smith you should change your vote.

Brady, Dalton, Taysom and Arod. Hill probably won't be a QB, but probably still in the league as a gadget guy.

Brady and Arod will be close to the end. Would not be surprised if either retired before 2023 started

Dalton is a coin flip, as is Matt Ryan.

I guess guys like Tyros or Colt Mccoy may still be around but in what capacity? Lol

So, are you saying that his career may be in jeopardy now?

well tbf I do remember seeing a report that retirement isn't off the table if he doesn't get traded.

He's 37, and just got married. if he's not happy and doesn't feel like starting over with a new organization it wouldn't blow me away.

That said I don't remember where I saw it, or the validity of it but it can def bring into question on whether or not he'll play into his 40's.

It would be a shame as obviously he's not currently being hampered by his age, but I also don't really see him following Brady's shoes and playing into his mid 40's. Brady does it because it would eat him alive if he knew he still had it in him to compete but packed it in early. I've never really gotten that type of vibe from Rodgers. he seems a lot more mellow, and I do think he'd be content with what he's accomplished if he retired today.
