Short Term Rebuild: Pay up for Jonathan Taylor?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Short Term Rebuild: Pay up for Jonathan Taylor?

Postby iherscovitch » Wed Jul 08, 2020 3:29 pm

Hi everyone, I'm in the middle of a hopefully short rebuild - looking to be competitive in 2021 or 2022 (see sig for league/team details) and I've been debating offering a slight overpay to address team needs.
  • Give: Lamb, Singletary, 2021 2nd (early), 2021 2nd (late)
  • Get: Jonathan Taylor, Jordan Love, 2021 3rd (early)
I don't love giving up the extra draft capital here, but Taylor and Jordan Love both fit my strategy/timeline quite well. Singletary's upside is capped in BUF and the 2021 rookie class will have less high-end RB talent depth, so I'm considering making the splash now to get a (probable) workhorse back when 2021 rolls around. Giving up Lamb's upside is the painful part, but I think I've got the WR depth and the 2021 draft class should provide another crop of fantastic rookie WRs. Running back prospects like JT don't come around that often, and he's landed in a great spot.

Am I crazy for thinking about this? Someone please check my temperature and tell me if I've got rookie fever.

Id make that deal for JT himself. So the added bonus of Love and the 3rd makes this an easy accept for me.

In 10T: Love and the late 2nd cancel out

So it's a downgrade from early 2nd to early 3rd and Lamb+Singletary to get JT

Ultimately I would pay that, but I see a lot higher bust risk in Lamb than most seem to

Value doesn’t seem bad to me and honestly with JT in your lineup I think you have an outside chance to compete this year. I’d probably pull the trigger.

Value is on the Taylor side, but I think Lamb has higher long term value. I'm very high on Lamb though.

Yes, you have rookie fever, but it apparently only applies to to the rookies currently on your team. There’s no way this gets accepted. If it does, congrats on the fleecing.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

In a 12 teamer I'd do this with no hesitation. In a 10 teamer I think I'm okay with it. Lamb fits into your plan just as well at JT. Getting love is a plus. If you can get this deal is make it.

Received an offer:

Give: Ceedee Lamb, 2021 1st, 2021 2nd
Get: Jonathan Taylor, Jordan Love, 2021 3rd

The 2021 3rd is all but guaranteed to be the 3.01 or 3.02.
The 2021 1st and 2nd are both mid-late picks by my estimation.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger here and grab a top RB prospect while also helping my QB situation, although giving up the 2021 1st is a tough one (could turn into a QB like Lance/Fields or RB like Hubbard/Harris).

I am not nearly as enamored with JT as everyone else and wouldn't give up Lamb and my entire 21 early draft for that RB in PPR.

To me Love is equal to a late 2021 2nd, so this trade can basically be seen as Lamb+2021 1st for JT+2021 3rd.

I do get the PPR argument against JT, but I also believe his receiving ability has been overlooked.

Its not just that JT had 926 carries in college, for perspective Saquan Barkley has 1149 carries combined for college and his NFL career. Everything about him shows me he is like buying a Ferrari. Everyone wants one and all your friends are gonna be jealous but in 3 years or so the maintenance is gonna kill you. I feel obligated to draft him because I cant deny the talent but man I want someone to gimme that deal because Ceedee is my WR1 in the draft and 5 years from now I worry JT is one of those stories we tell about "if only he stayed healthy".

Any evidence to back a claim that being extremely Productive in college is a back thing because of the carry count?
Even if there is some evidence I’m not aware of, you could trade him in 2 years for a massive haul if he hits anyways so you shouldn’t let a prediction of a shorter career deter you IMO. If you don’t think he will be productive, that’s fine, speaking solely about the carries weighing on him in a few years.
