24 team startup draft advice

Postby L.Washington » Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:37 am

I'm doing a new startup this week that's going to be a 24 teamer, lineup requirements of SF, RB, 2x WR, TE, 2x FLX, 7 bench spots, 1 IR spot, and 3 taxi squad spots. So it's pretty much a 1QB league using a SF spot instead so you don't take a 0 on bye weeks. It's also 6 point passing TDs and PPR with a TE premium (2PPR).

This is by far the biggest league I've ever done and I'm a bit uncertain as to strategy here. My gut is that getting a good QB early is still incredibly important even though it's only a 1 QB league, but other than that idk. My usual strategy (I usually play SF TE premium leagues) is to trade back in the early rounds and then target QBs and TEs early (only if I can get one of the top 3 TEs though), and if that doesn't work mostly stock up on young stud WRs to build a foundation for a long-term winner.

If anyone has experience with this size of league I'd love to hear the dos and do nots here. Especially related to trading back; my gut tells me that trading back is going to be much more difficult and potentially dangerous with such huge gaps between when we pick. We're also doing a derby to pick draft spots when we start up and a third round reversal. Are 1.01-1.05 still the best picks in this format? I assume yes, but I would love to hear opinions on that.

I would not trade back. Because of the shallow starting requirements and premiums for QBs and TEs, I would try to get at least one top QB and TE If possible. Then I’d look at WRs especially since you only have to start one RB.

I want to be crazy and trade up and grab a top 4 te and a decently high QB and build around those. The positional advantage those two players should give will be significant. A lot of the strategy is going to depend on your pick and if you can move up

Well, I ended up drawing 1.04, and I just traded 2.21 and 3.21 for 1.02 and 8.01 so I'm gonna have a top 2 QB and a top 2 RB so I'd say things are off to a good start here. Thanks for the advice!

Kittle would have outscored every rb not named cmc last year in ppg.. Just saying.

I'd rather go top 2 qb and top 2 te.

Get the QB’s and TE’s. Only having to start 1 RB that’d probably the last spot I’d worry about unless a screaming value fell in my lap.

Oops, grabbed Saquon and Lamar (went CMC, Saquon, Mahomes, Lamar). I have a feeling based on the way these guys are talking that the TEs will take a while to go despite the premium and that QBs will likely go slow too but we'll see.

I highly suggest seeing if you can somehow trade up again in a bit for a te. If you were able to somehow do that it really doesn't matter what wrs you get.

That makes a ton of sense. Based on offers I got for my picks already and the chatter in the league I think I should be able to move up to get in striking range of Andrews when the time comes so I'll target that.

I disagree with everyone here. I wouldn’t trade up again even with shallowish starting positions this is a deep league. Also no reason to overpay for Andrews just because it’s 2ppr, he’s not a volume receiver IMO that’s going to catch 100 balls like Kelce so he doesn’t get any more of a boost than anyone else. I’d personally make sure you get a top 10ish te, preferably 2 of them and at least 1 decent prospect. Tes can be flexed on winning teams in this format so personally I think the advantage is in having multiple Not overpaying for 1. Kittle/Kelce do provide a hell of an advantage so getting 1 is nice, but trading up again for 1 will leave you hurting elsewhere.

Yeah, that trade was insane lol. Well, Kelce, Kittle, and Andrews went at 1.10, 1.12, and 1.14 respectively so I guess my read was off. I'll probably try to move Saquon for Kittle+ but if I can't pull it off I'm still pretty happy with where I'm sitting.
