Commish question

Hey all.....I could use some help here. I know there is a commissioner specific forum but this is the forum I frequent so thought I’d ask for opinions here.

I took over as commissioner for a league where the previous commissioner went AWOL. While the league has an extensive constitution, there is no mention of rule changes.

A few days after our rookie draft completed, an owner requested we vote to drop DST and K. Several owners protested saying voting should take place prior to draft (I tend to agree). Both sides are pushing hard.

In general, when do you vote on rule changes?
Do you feel commissioner can rule unilaterally on when rule changes should occur?
Any thoughts on my specific predicament? I know consensus is DST and K are frowned upon, but I don’t think that’s pertinent to this discussion. My question is broader than just DST and K since this will set a new precedent.

My co-commissioner and I only put things to a vote if it drastically changes the league. In this case dropping DST or Kickers is a big change. I would put that to a vote but not until the 2021 draft. I would leave the format as is for this season now that your rookie draft has passed. You could also propose bringing in an IDP player or two to keep the defensive side in fantasy. Team DEFs in dynasty dont make much sense to me, but then again my league has them, but we are also moving away from that in the future.

You can't make changes like that unless it's the off season.
I make most changes without a league vote, if it's something I think hands down is just better and not that controversial.
However for something like this I think a league vote is in order. But in the off season.
I also don't take things to a league vote unless I already approved of the change.

I would phase it in if it’s what the majority wants but not for this season. Kicker is useless, but some owners may be strongly against this move and hard to pivot fast if you have strong resistance. Maybe no kicker for 2021 and no def for 2022?

In our league we have the commish as well as 2 to 3 other people the commish has selected to bounce stuff off of. the people he has chosen are guys from both ends of the spectrum to get an overall idea and balanced approach to any new changes.

with your question about rules:
I would push that change to next off season. I know this season hasn't started and guys probably didn't draft a kicker or DST so it really doesn't matter, but rule changes should happen before anything happens in the next league year. once the rookie draft starts or trading opens (if it closes) that year has started.

basically I would push it to next year, and I like DST and kickers (they actually determine the outcome sometimes, which means they matter. some guys don't like them cause they don't know how to how to predict em and it frustrates them...IMO.

Addendum: I would drop the team defense and go to IDP. Time to man up!

This is not a good idea. Adding an extra starting position or two completely alters the league makeup. Start up drafts and trades are all made with specific starting requirements in mind. As a commish myself, I would not allow a change like this, and would leave a league that made a severe alteration like this. It would severely hurt teams that made 2 for 1 type deals to upgrade at a starting position, for instance. It's too big an alteration to the balance of the league.
