Sammy Watkins might sit out 2020

Couldn't find any recent Watkins threads, but I'm sure one of the mods will dig one up to attach this to...

Sammy Watkins says he might consider sitting out 2020 and taking a season off if KC wins the SB. Next year would be the final year of his deal and KC will likely want him to take a paycut if not flat out cut him, so this may be some kind of negotiation tactic or something, I don't think it can be entirely written off as something that won't happen though. With the recent trend of players retiring at a young age and LB Telvin Smith of the Jags stepping away this year, this could be something players start doing now.

IF KC wins, he will have made his money and gotten a superbowl ring. sounds like a great career to me. He should save his brain, not like he is a superstar or anything either.

If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a noise?

Weird timing for this announcement

Watkins has always confused me. I've watched him enough to see that he is immensely talented, but I haven't watched him enough to understand why he's so inconsistent and why we only see that talent in flashes

x2 Watkins is pretty worthless in dynasty at this point anyway. I see his potential retirement / break causing little to no impact to Mahomes either, as KC probably would've cut him anyway in the offseason to save some money.

Like most Bills fans, we were never sold on him and his antics. Never got the sense that he was a committed player. I unfortunately own him on my best dynasty team.

Not saying it’s a bad idea if he does sit out but I think this kinda alludes to why some players don’t live up to their talent. They don’t have the drive to be great or even elite, they’d rather not put themselves through the trouble, which with all of the head injuries, etc, I get it but Watkins has always struck me as kinda lazy.

Fantasy perspective, please, please sit out Sammy...stop giving people hope...only to remind us you haven't been relevant in years.

Real-life perspective, who cares, you do you, Sammy.

Yeah I have him in one league, but mostly because I can’t trade him and can’t being myself to cut him. He only sniffed my starting lineup a couple times to cover bye/injuries (and because we have several flex spots). No big loss as he is replaceable. I wish to god I would have sold him after week 1, but man I thought it was a preview of things to come...

Oh well. He will probably retire on my roster.

Everyone who (rightly at the time) picked him at 1.01 will be happy to close this book.

I drafted him at 1.01 way back when, but traded him a few years ago. Thought the guy was going to be a stud, guess not.

Look at the rest of the first round that year:

1.01 Watkins
1.02 Johnny Manziel
1.03 Bishop Sankey
1.04 Terrence West
1.05 Mike Evans
1.06 Carlos Hyde
1.07 Eric Ebron
1.08 Brandin Cooks
1.09 Blake Bortles
1.10 Odell Beckham
1.11 Jordan Matthews
1.12 Kelvin Benjamin

Didn't really go well for most owners.

Land mines everywhere! That was my first rookie draft, after my 1st season of my first time playing dynasty, got 1.02 and took Mike Evans, would’ve taken Watkins if Evans went 1.01. It’s crazy, in that same league, OBJ was dropped after the initial rookie draft and picked up by some team, which out bid me and others, I’m sure, to get him.

I wasn't playing Dynasty back then, but how the hell do Sankey and West go over Evans? Evans was what 6th overall in the draft? I'm assuming it was a SF draft because of the QBs going so high, but Bortles and especially Manziel were blatantly obvious future busts to me from the very beginning, no chance I would have taken either. I know it's easy to say now, but I absolutely would have drafted

1 Watson
2 Evans
3 OBJ

That year and in that order.
