How did I do in this startup draft?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

you had better hope your RBs dont get hurt. dont see too often when someone is carrying as many QBs as RBs. you have some good starters but bye weeks are gonna kill you. i'd give it a B-.

Unless there was absolutely insane value to be found, I wouldn't have grabbed Gates & Finley. You probably grabbed them early on, and one of those picks could've been your a good starting WR or RB3.

If I grab a stud top 5 TE, then I'm waiting forever to grab my next TE, and grabbing a prospect.

That's just me though.

I think your balance is wrong. 5 QBs, 13 WR and only 5 RB? I wouldn't like that at all.

X2 try and package one of your TE for another RB. I would rather have young RB talent than QB or WR.

Not horrible, but I agree w/ the majority here. If I were you I would try to move Gates (he doesn't fit with the youth of your team) and a WR for a stud RB. Then you may want to look at moving a couple more WR to get a little better depth at RB. Personally, I don't think you need a 5th QB so I would drop either Jackson or Webb and add a RB...

Well let me clear up a few things first.. We only need to start 1 RB and you cannot start 3 RB's.. Running backs flew off the board and there were none left, why would I take a back up of a back up just to have more RBs when I could build depth with starters? In this league there are many different starting options, 1 RB 4 WR 1 TE, 1 RB 3 WR 2 TE, 2 RB 3 WR 1 TE ect...

I agree with the person that talked about not drafting another TE until late after you have your starter.. However my draft strategy I will be starting BOTH of my TE's and here is why.. The WR's that were on the board were borderline #2 WR's, where when you look at Gates he puts up boderline #1 WR numbers, so why not pick him and start him being that I am able to instead of a lower quality TE?

In this league Gates had 251 points last year.. For an example Vincent Jackson had 253 and Sidney Rice had 264, I think some people read to much into the fact that just because he is a TE he is not worth as much as a WR where the point totals show otherwise.. We will see how it works out but I think it was the best move to make..

Oh yeah and the reason for the 5 QBs.. We have a taxi squad where you can keep 7 players but they have to be rookies or 2nd year players, otherwise it is a 40 man active roster.. Again there were no RBs to pick so why not take a chance on Joe Webb or Tavaris Jackson? If Favre plays I drop Jackson, but we are talking about a 47th round pick here.. I can keep Joe Webb and Tebow on the taxi squad and just see what happens with them..

No issue here with taking both TEs. If the value is there, its the right pick.

Given that you can start up to 4 WRs, you left yourself with way too many rookies and no depth for the short term behind Crabtree and Smith. You needed to invest a pick or two on some aging players that could fill those roles in the short term. Rookie WRs rarely produce well enough in their first season to be startable. Correct this issue and you should have a team which can compete for the short and longer term.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Yep I completely agree with this and it is the one area that I do not like.. I picked up Chambers and just lost out on Mason, I would be much happier if I had both of them.. The thing with the WR's though is obviously they go pretty quick with the PPR and being able to start 4 but I felt better drafting a guy like Mike Williams with the upside than TJ Houz or a guy like that.. Could end up costing me but I don't mind stashing a few on the taxi squad for a year or two and see what I end up with.. I am in the works though trying to pick up another vet for bye week fillers.. It is either that or hope that Knox pans out like I think he may.. I also have Edelman in case Welker goes on the PUP list so he would definelty be a good filler as well..

For having a small amount of RBs, I like the ones that you have. Something will present itself on the waiver wire during the season.

Do you have a link for your draft? Since you're asking for everyone's opinion, we can give better feedback by seeing who you took where, and who else was available.

Like taking Gates for example. If I was drafting, and I had Finley already, then I definitely would've taken a Mike Wallace type of guy over another TE. But maybe you got Gates late in the draft, when guys like Mike Wallace were already gone. Who knows.

Here is the link to the draft.. Also check out the other rosters and tell me which team you think has the best one for now and the future.. FYI Mike Wallace was there when I took Gates.. Again Gates with his 250 points last year would rank him as the #12 WR, IMO that is good value, but like I said time will tell.. I also took him before Finley knowing that Finley would make it back around where Gates would not have..

Re: How did I do in this startup draft?

In 2 of my 3 startup drafts, Finley was the #1 tight end taken in the draft. He went early in the 4th round.

Vernon Davis was the #2 tight end taken in both of those drafts

Celek was #3.

Gates lasted until the 6th round I think.

Sounds like you got great value on Finley.

But from your original post, it looks like if you start 2RBs, then you can only start 1 TE + 3WRs?????? If so, then 2 elite TEs would be a waste, as you'd be starting Rice & JStew at your RB + your flex. If your plan was to start 2 tight ends each week (meaning you only play 1 RB), then I wouldn't have taken JStew in round 2, I would've taken an elite WR.

My last draft was similar, except we can play 2RBs/4WRs. I took Rice in the 1st round, and then used that as justification to grab stud WRs before taking another RB.

No here is the starting breakdown.. You MUST start 1 RB, 2 WR, and 1 TE... Then there are 2 FLEX spots, however you cannot start more than 2 RBs or 2 TEs... So here are the options..
1 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE
1 RB, 4 WR, 1 TE
2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE
2 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE

If I couldn't start the 2 TE's you are correct it would be idiotic of me to pick 2 that early, however we can start 2.. My starting lineup will be this one.
2 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE
