Vernon Davis versus Jermichael Finley

Postby Steelersfan » Sat Jun 05, 2010 2:57 pm

I'd like to hear your thoughts concening which TE you prefer and why. Both have been drafted closely in two inaugural drafts that I have been a part of:

DLF III

Finley: 4.11
Davis: 5.04

DLF IV

Davis: 5.05
Finley: 5.06

Assume PPR...

As many of you know, I've always been on the Vernon Davis bandwagon. After setting the NFL record for TE TDs in a season, I don't see how any other TE could be drafted ahead of him. Davis is currently my #1 dynasty TE.

Easy choice....Davis. Finley as the #1 fantasy TE is pure speculation until he actually outperforms Davis.

I took Davis as the first TE off the board of the PDL draft at 4.09. He will continue to get tons of catches and TDs. Crabtree's presence and development over the entire season will only give Davis nicer matchups.
Michigan Maulers
QB: Brady, Bradford, Henne, Gabbert, Hill, Edwards
RB: McCoy, Turner, Ingram, Spiller, R. Jennings, Tolbert, Lewis, McGahee, Buckhalter, J. Harrison
WR: Fitzgerald, G. Jennings, V-Jax, Crabtree, Holmes, McCluster, K. Walter
TE: V. Davis, Dreessen, Bennett
K: Akers, Barth
DL: T. Kelly, Ngata, A. Brown, D. Edwards, E. Brown, Avril
LB: Lofton, Cushing, V. Miller, Orakpo, Angerer, Wimbley, Witherspoon
DB: L. Landry, Rhodes, Byrd, T. Williams, Finnegan, Meriweather, J. Smith

Its a toss up imo.

finley has more upside based on offense and QB
davis is simply a freak and finally became what everyone thought he could become.

I typically would say that talelnt wins out over situation but not here. The slightest of edges to finley.

Got both so I am fine with enjoying both succeed immensely over the next couple of years. 8-)

TDs can be hard to predict. A TE who gets receptions consistently is more valuable. That said, I think Finley has more competitions for targets.

As for Davis: teams do adjust to opponents' successes. For example, Seattle drafted a FS with strong coverage ability. Might it have something to do with a division rival's recently potent receiving weapon? Certainly, in part.

I expect Davis' TD numbers to regress, which is typically what happens statistically. Alex Smith is going to have to be able to get past one or two reads to keep a starting job in the NFL. If Davis repeats, it's likely the QB has not taken the next step forward, so Vernon does have some things working for him...

Chalk me up as one of the speculators. But I wouldn't argue with anyone who took Davis first.

Davis. After being in Singletary's doghouse earlier, he is now a favorite target of the offense. While I expect more defenses to focus on him as Allen pointed out, I still think he is a better option at TE than Finley.

Wow, this is a close one. Obviously personal preference seems to decide which one of these guys goes first, bit they seem to be in the same range. I went with finley because of Rodgers. The biggest factor always has to be the qb, and finley seems to be set long term. Finleys lack a track record o's something to think about, but Davis hasn't exactly been putting up big numbers for years either.

Really close one but I would go Finley because of the better and more consistent QB play
Start: 2 QB, 3 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE (All TDs=6, 1 per 10 rush/rec, 1 per 25 pass, NO PPR) 8 teams
QB: Rodgers, Vick, Cutler, Schaub, Luck
RB: Rice, CJ, McFadden, Richardson, Stewart, Ingram, Spiller, Vereen
WR: Green, Marshall, Roddy, Jennings, Roddy, Bowe, Maclin, Britt, A Brown, Williams (TB), Collie, Smith (STL)
TE: Graham, Finley, F Davis, Cook
Taxi Squad: Tebow, Crabtree, Jeffrey, Hill, Gordon

I voted Davis here, I think Finley needs to actually outperform Davis to think otherwise. Right now its all speculation and upside with Finley.
