Short and Long Term: Karlos Williams vs. Shane Vereen

Postby austin10splayer » Fri Oct 02, 2015 8:01 pm

I'm currently in trade talks and the second player involved would be one of these guys. Now I like both of them. Short term (next few games) it seems like Karlos Williams has the advantage as he has looked good in a time-share and with the backfield to himself could shine. This is a .5 PPR league though so Vereen will seem to always have a decent floor with that. Williams is obviously a guy who has seen a huge increase in value as of late.

Long term Williams is 4 years younger than Vereen at age 22, but Vereen is only 26 and still has productive years ahead of him. Do you see Williams being a big part of a backfield (Bills or elsewhere) longterm, or is he a guy who will end up more of a Zac Stacy *not talking talent wise* where the situation gives him a lion's share of carries but then he fades to nothing in the coming years. Keep in mind here that LeSean McCoy is under contract for FOUR more years and won't be a free agent until 2020. Vereen long-term is fighting with Williams and Jennings who have been uninspiring but it seems like he is destined to be only a pass catching back in the Giants offense.

Which do you prefer in the short and long term?

I still prefer Williams. he seems like a workhorse back and is still going to get 10-15 touches per game. He can do a lot with those touches. You can also almost guarantee McCoy will miss at least some time each year.

Depending on how McCoy is performing he could be cut as soon as 2017. That year his dead cap is less then his cap hit. 7.875 mil dead vs 8.875 mil cap. Still I like what Williams has already shown and think he has a real chance at continuing that role in this offense.
