Another startup draft to critique.....

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Another startup draft to critique.....

Postby jordanzs » Thu May 20, 2010 11:51 am

I'm kinda curious to see what the DLF community thinks of this draft! I went in with a different strategy than last year when I built nothing but youth. I wanted to mix youth with guys in their prime as well as some old producers to rotate out. We cutdown from 24 players to 15 players, and I plan on keeping 1QB, 1TE, 1DST (maybe), 5-6RBs (my top 4 plus I'll find a waiver wire pickup during the season), and the rest for WRs (got some prospects that I want to develop.

I have another startup draft in a couple of weeks, so I'm open to advice & suggestions, and in that draft, I'm sure I'll end up doing something totally different.

1.08 Johnson, Andre HOU WR 5 8 -138 (traded up to get him at 1.8)
2.05 Brees, Drew NOS QB 12 17 -110 (our league gives bonus for 40+ yards pass plays, and Brees throws a lot of those)
3.12 McCoy, LeSean PHI RB 34 36 -28
4.05 Davis, Vernon SFO TE 42 41 10
5.12 Thomas, Pierre NOS RB 48 60 -91
6.01 Moss, Randy NEP WR 29 61 -192 (sure he's old, but I love the value)
7.08 Tate, Golden SEA WR 116 80 174
8.01 Hardesty, Montario CLE RB 93 85 32
10.01 White, LenDale SEA RB 119 109 28
10.05 Jones, James GBP WR 205 113 257 (I think he'll replace Driver, who I grabbed next. One of them will be a good producer each week)
12.01 Driver, Donald GBP WR 98 133 -70
12.05 Jackson, Fred BUF RB 112 137 -50
13.12 Price, Taylor NEP WR 230 156 125
14.01 Gonzalez, Tony ATL TE 90 157 -95
15.12 Eagles, Philadelphia PHI Def 150 180 -36
16.01 Mitchell, Carlton CLE WR 286 181 105
16.10 Jones, Thomas KCC RB 128 190 -62
18.01 Garrard, David JAC QB 170 205 -23
19.12 Chargers, San Diego SDC Def 189 228 -20
20.10 Douglas, Harry ATL WR 258 238 8
21.12 Skelton, John ARI QB 288 252 10
22.10 Hamilton, Lynell NOS RB 288 262 4
23.12 Sutton, Tyrell CAR RB 288 276 1
24.10 Cundiff, Billy BAL PK 288 286 0

Looks pretty solid, although you could definitely use an upgrade at RB.

One question though: What is the point of drafting 24 to cutdown to 15?
Start: 2 QB, 3 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE (All TDs=6, 1 per 10 rush/rec, 1 per 25 pass, NO PPR) 8 teams
QB: Rodgers, Vick, Cutler, Schaub, Luck
RB: Rice, CJ, McFadden, Richardson, Stewart, Ingram, Spiller, Vereen
WR: Green, Marshall, Roddy, Jennings, Roddy, Bowe, Maclin, Britt, A Brown, Williams (TB), Collie, Smith (STL)
TE: Graham, Finley, F Davis, Cook
Taxi Squad: Tebow, Crabtree, Jeffrey, Hill, Gordon

**Roster size = 24

**Rookie Draft = 5 rounds (starting then in 2011 after the inaugural draft; the Rookie Draft will be scheduled typically in early May)

**Veteran Keeper Max: approximately August 1 each year there will be a cut-down of veterans. Teams can keep anywhere from zero to 15.

**There will be a 4 round free agent draft in August.

**Rookie Keeper Max: this is a slight nuance from traditional leagues. You can keep an unlimited number of rookies (cannot exceed the roster limit of 24 players). Typically (and on average) teams will have the ability to keep 5 rookies. However, you have the right to keep more (i.e., if you acquire extra rookie picks). The idea is if you trade players and acquire 3rd, 4th or 5th round picks, for example, you shouldn't have to then turn around and cut them before week one even rolls around and you shouldn't have to dip into your veteran slots. You may cut rookies of course prior to the veteran draft or whenever but you also have full access to keep them. This will make rookie picks more valuable than your standard leagues. It also should make for more trades. Imagine being out of the playoffs and being able to trade a defense, for example, that you won't keep anyway to a team in contention to acquire an extra 5th round pick that you can draft a well-crafted flyer rookie to sit on without having to throw them back to the waiver wire before the season even starts.

Yeah I'll definitely be watching the waiver wire & putting some bids on another up & coming RB. We're locked from picking up free agents until after week 1, so I'm sure I'll see something during preseason.
