Expansion Draft

Postby ddog2303 » Fri May 29, 2015 7:49 pm

So we are contemplating adding expansion teams to our dynasty league but haven't found any good ways to do it. We have 2 great teams, 4 ok teams and 2 bad teams. We want a way to do it where the good teams don't lose all of the work they've done but the bad teams don't lose their only good players. Any ideas?

Start a 2nd league with your desired number of teams and leave this one intact.

Or let every team protect 10-12 players on their roster and hold a dispersal draft with what's left over.

The best thing to do is either start a second league as suggested or do a complete redraft, those are the only fair ways to do it.

I do know that if we redraft I'll lose members. This league is ok with adding teams but there are some members who have taken over bad teams and made decent teams out of them. So they don't want to destroy what they've built. And I don't blame them.

We did this about 8 years ago. Expanded from 8 to 12 teams. Existing teams were allowed to keep a starting lineup with the expansion teams snake drafting a starting lineup from the free agents. Then the expansion teams got the first 4 picks in the free agent/rookie draft. Some people complained a little but realized it was what was best for the league

Why would a new team join this league? I guess if you wanted to really test your rebuild skills and were very patient, sure. But would you join a league where your first start up pick wasn't until round 10?

CoolHandLukeB that's a fair point. But, because two teams hold a ton of the good players, the two expansion teams actually ended up being better than most of the existing teams. Some of the backups on those two teams are better than the starters. The only reason that has happened is because it's only year 3 so the salaries haven't quite caught up to the player's performance. But after this season those two teams won't be able to afford all of those players.

I think everyone here is nuts, acting like having an expansion draft is "unfair" or is somehow going to be fatal to the league. I've been in a couple leagues that have expanded (one of them has expanded twice!) and it's never been a big deal. Yes, a couple guys may bellyache for a couple minutes, but if it's in the best interest of the league, most guys end up understanding it. And as for why a new team would want to take it on, I took on an expansion a couple years ago in a dynasty baseball league and it's been a blast. Yes, I was dead meat the first year, but was on the cusp of the playoffs last year, and my team is pretty well stocked with young talent now.
