Maye vs. Daniels

Postby KCLep20 » Mon Aug 05, 2024 7:25 am

In most superflex drafts, the majority of us assume Caleb Williams will go #1. For the next 2 QB's that go, Daniels & Maye, it seems they are always ranked in that order and I'm not sure I necessarily agree...am I missing something?

Drake Maye is about to be 22 years old and is built like a prototypical QB. Jayden Daniels will be 24 in a few months so ~2 years older and while his height is ideal, he has a very lean frame.

I fully admit that for 2024, Jayden Daniels has more potential to start and produce and that may also be the case for 2025 depending on how the Pats re-build. But for years 3+ am i crazy for thinking Drake Maye is the better prospect? He can have 2 years, hopefully 1 sitting and 1 playing to then get primed for his year 3 season still only at 24-25. It's a bit of an unknown how they will build around him in New England, and while he might be a lower ceiling given the lack of elite rushing, I also view him to have a much higher floor given the size/style of play vs. Daniels who I'm terrified every time he gets hit.

Appreciate the thoughts/insights!

Prototypical QB that is great will always be valued better long term than the scat back mobile QB. Usually the pocket passer will last longer but for FF, the points of a mobile QB is too appealing to ignore. Look at Fields last year. Below average QB but in FF points, he was great.

While I love to see the proto QB excel, I would always defer to the high duel threat QB for FF. With that said, I have Maye in one league but that is just because both CW and JD were gonzo.

And if it were any team other than the Commanders, I'd trust them.....

I think Maye is the better long-term NFL QB prospect, but given the fantasy upside for Daniels, if given the choice in fantasy, I would choose Daniels.

Yeah, I think it's the fantasy upside versus the NFL upside. Maye probably has more long-term potential in the NFL, but go back and look at Tua's numbers last year. Huge passing yards but without rushing numbers he's not special.

It's the same reason that Anthony Richardson is getting so much love despite only playing 4 or 5 games a year. A rushing quarterback is still a cheat code and it's assumed/hoped that Daniels can do that.

Not much to add, except it's similar to comparing Herbert and A-Rich really. For FF, most would got with the more mobile guy. Those rushing yards (and TDs) are huge. It's why Cam was a high pick for many years yet no one saw him as a great "prototypical QB".

I'm taking Maye. Seeing him out there, I think there's Allen like upside. QB1 upside. He has the rushing ability, and the arm, off script stuff.

Daniels, has all that too, but he's so slight. He's not Lamar. I just want the guy who seems better built to handle it, considering I think at their ceiling, both have QB1 overall upside.

Throwing a bunch of random stuff on top of fries doesn't mean you call it "poutine".

I've had Maye as my QB2 from the jump, but unfortunately have not had a chance to land him in a single league... I'm disappointed for sure.
