If Burton's a Puka like sleeper then I'm going with McCaffrey as my choice

I'd bet that there is no Puka this year, as day 3 picks in the NFL Draft very rarely turn in WR1 seasons as rookies.

Or break the rookie receptions record.
Or the rookie yardage record that has stood for 63 years.
Or score 246 fantasy points (0.5 PPR) winning leagues for owners everywhere.

It's a dumb thread title and a dumb premise, but we're going to hear it a lot this offseason, so I guess someone had to do it.

Chase the extreme outliers at your own leisure... but odds are, there will only ever be one Puka Nacua.
Triggered much?

Since legette is falling to the 3rd round of my fantasy drafts in SF, I guess he could be considered as a puka sleeper despite 1st round capital 😅

A more appropriate title would just be WR sleepers this year. Not gonna find a Puka every year, but there are usually some 4th round + guys that are at least rosterable and can be played in a pinch.

As far as the sleepers, I think we should be careful here. If we want true sleepers we should be looking outside of the obvious ones. Guys like Baker and Corley are getting hype, will probably be 3rd round guys. If you want to land true sleepers, look for opportunity.

Palmer
Washington
Flournoy
Vele
Cornelius Johnson

These would be the guys I'd look into. haven't done a ton of work, but they're probably the late rounders that are most likely to at least get the opportunity to get on the field.

Yeah, I guess I meant "4th round rookie draft fliers that could greatly outperform that spot."

Over the years, I've had more luck grabbing RB's as my 4th round fliers than WR's.

Isaiah Pacheco, Aaron Jones, James Robinson, Phillip Lindsay, Jerome Ford were amongst RB's that I was able to grab in round 4 of rookie drafts, who had higher value at one time or another.

Maybe others have had better luck with 4th round WR's than I have.

You even said it in your initial post. People are just splitting hairs for the sake of doing so with the title.

To answer your question, I’ll say Roman Wilson. He typically goes in the 3rd but I have seen him fall to the 4th of rookie drafts. Day 2 capital, 136 vacated targets in PIT, improved QB (2024 Wilson >> Pickett), and I generally trust PIT’s ability to draft WR given their relative success in doing so.

As for the player I’m not sure how he will fit into the offense but he has 4.39 wheels and had one of the best YPR in college football last year. There are worse WR you can take in the later rounds of your rookie drafts.

Interesting approach. I got Estime at 3.12 and was very happy with that.

i'm thankful to the fantasy football savants for telling me that a day 3 WR is very unlikely to break all time rookie records. really the content people come on here for. discuss day 3 WRs or argue semantics? mmmh...

"chasing the outlier" would be spending 1sts and 2nds to buy 3rds and 4ths to spend on late round WRs. i prefer RBs in those rounds, but if you like brenden rice and spend your fourth on him, it's hardly "chasing an outlier", it's just your regular dart throw, like any pick you'd make there.

other than the early 4th guys (baker, franklin, walker) i'd give a go at ainas smith (playmaker, some opportunity), rice (opportunity and pedigree) and cornelius johnson (opportunity, picked by his college HC)

To me the obvious answer has to be Troy Franklin. Although they don’t have a similar style of play or frame, they both have a similar path for success. Coming into last season (although nobody expected puka’s production to be as absurd as it was), he had a clear path to becoming the WR 2 on the offense. In Franklin’s case, the Broncos sent away jeudy thus clearing the way for the same spot on the depth chart. Having Nix (his old college qb) means a pre established chemistry. By no means am I anticipating Puka level production because it was something historical, however given the price you’d have to spend on Franklin, I wouldn’t say a WR2 finish is completely out of the realm of possibility.

It'll take an injury to fulfill that destiny, but I have a buddy who is convinced that Ainias Smith is the answer. My buddy has been known to smoke crack though while 'watching tape' though. I did just grab a $1 share of Smith just in case, but I'm sure I'll be dropping him later on....
