Rebuilding: Trade for Stroud?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Rebuilding: Trade for Stroud?

Postby blemly » Thu May 02, 2024 7:32 pm

Normally it is not my cup of tea to compile what few assets I have in a rebuild for a franchise QB but the opportunity has presented itself.

Give: JT + Devonta Smith
Get: Stroud

Team is currently:
Young/Cousins/Tannehill
JT/Charbs/Gibson/Akers/Herbert
Smith/Flowers/Pickens/Godwin/C Samuel/Dotson
Knox/Njoku
1.04, 2.04, 4.04, 4.08
2 25 1sts, 1 25 2nd

Do I have enough leftover to make this move? And if so, would you? I think the value is there.
Team 1 (Rebuild ): 12-tm SF 0.5PPR/1.0PP1D
QB: Williams, Young, Tannehill
RB: Herbert, Akers, Gibson, Wilson, Abanikanda
WR: MHJ, Nabers, Flowers, Pickens, Dotson, Downs, Chark, Boyd, Douglas
TE: Knox
Picks: 3 ‘25 1s, 4 ‘25 2s, ‘25 3

Team 2: 14-tm SF PPR/1.5TEP
QB: Burrow, Wilson, Lance
RB: JT, Mixon, Pollard, Laube, Guerendo, Hill, Patterson, Hines
WR: Hill, Cooper, DK, DJM, D. Samuel, Sutton
TE: Freiermuth, Gesicki, Hudson
Picks: ‘25 3rd, ‘25 4th

Team 3 10-tm SF PPR
QB: Mahomes/Dak/Cousins/Jones
RB: JT, Kamara, Jacobs, Zeke, Singletary, Moss
WR: AJB, Diggs, Allen, Cooper, Wilson, Kirk, Sutton, Williams, Bateman, E. Moore
TE: Goedert, Schultz, Granson, Hill
Picks: 1.07, 2.04, 2.07

Got it. Great to get one of the best young QBs in SF without having to give up one of your QBs. That is never a bad thing. You will obviously be giving up your best RB and WR at the moment. You can replace the WR at 1.04 but might take some time.

Personally, I would do this and figure out RB and WR later.

Exactly. Stroud should be viewed as a 10 year asset.

There are a good number of options that have recently presented themselves and curious if they change any of your opinions.

Option A: give Smith + 2.04; get 1.02
Option B: give JT; get 1.02
Option C: give Smith; get 1.05

One additional wrinkle in all of this is that if I am able to get the 1.02 I can turn it into the 1.05 + 1.11, which I would probably do.

Is it better to have 1) Stroud + 1.04 + my team minus JT + Smith; 2) 1.04 + 1.05 + 1.11 + my team minus JT; or 3) 1.04 + 1:05 + my team minus Smith?

1.04 and 1.05 would likely be the third QB and second WR, or the second WR and third QB. To put faces on draft picks, that's either Maye+Nabers, or Daniels+Odunze.

So, your choices are actually...
A) Stroud+Nabers ... or Stroud+Daniels
B) Maye+Nabers+1.11+DSmith ... (feel free to make this Daniels+Odunze+1.11+DSmith)
C) Maye+Nabers+JT ... (feel free to make this Daniels+Odunze+JT)

In my opinion, option A (no matter if the pick is Nabers or Daniels) is by far the best of the three in a 12tm/SF

Yea this is how I think about it too. In a vacuum the Stroud deal is good value my only hang up was securing my franchise QB at the expense of my two most tradeable assets. But the benefit is I don’t have to take a risk that Maye/Daniels bust because I already know what I have in Stroud. Of course if either turns out to be just as good it would make more sense to take them, but that is a big ask.

Thanks for the time, Ant!

Could you give JT and Smith and land the 1.02 and 1.05.

Could net you a MHJ at 2, at 4 you could have Daniels/Nabers and 5 could go Maye/McCarthy.

The Stroud deal is an easy accept in my opinion but Id be tempted to get two top tier picks for JT and Smith. Having a stud QB is a always a plus but I wouldnt say you are desperate at the position. The Panthers are bringing in weapons for Young and he should improved, Kirk still has a solid amount of time left and should be a top 10 fantasy QB. Id be thrilled to leave the draft with two stud WRs like MHJ and Nabers who could easily be top 5 dynasty WRs in the next two years plus one of either Maye or McCarthy.
Main Home League

TE: McBride and Dulcich

Draft Picks
-1.02, 3.01 and 4 24 4ths.
-3 25 1sts, 1 25 2nd, 3 25 3rds and 3 25 4ths
-2 26 1sts, 2 26 2nds, 1 26 3rd, and1 26 4th

The options have dwindled and we are down to two options:

Option A: Give JT + D. Smith; Get: Stroud
Option B (another owner): Give JT; Get 25 1st, 25 1st, 2.02, 25 2nd

Call me crazy, but I think I am leaning Option B (the one where I don't get Stroud)?

Sorry, I like to read the op and respond to it before reading any of the comments, that way I do not get influenced by them when I give my input.

So after posting, I read the thread, and just got to your last part.

Do you have any read on where the 2025 firsts will be? I.e, do these Pro first round picks both project to be late? One mid, one late? Getting two firsts and two seconds for JT is great, assuming there's some actual value to the firsts.

If they both project to be late, I would just take the deal for Stroud

In a 12 Team Superflex league your first and second priority should be securing QBs. Give me Stroud. If the second deal was the only one on the table for JT, I'd smash. But all those picks don't equal an elite QB. That also allows you to go Nabers at 1.04 if Daniels is off the board (and would enable you to shop Cousins, I'd be okay with Young as my QB2 in a full rebuild, for more picks or a WR).

One of the owner's 1sts finished 7th last year and has no rookie picks this year, so it should be a middle 1st. The other owner's 1st went deep into the playoffs last year but with an aging roster and he is considering a tear down. Probably fair to consider both mid 1sts.

One other thing: I do think there is a decent chance I can move D. Smith separately along with a 2nd for the 1.05 and 1.11. That has recently come up as an option.
