Devy is Hard!

Postby tstafford » Tue Apr 30, 2024 8:15 am

Thought folks might find this informative but mostly entertaining.

I play in a salary cap, devy league. In the world of devy it is very shallow. Each team has the option to nominate two college players to go in to the pool each year. Those players are available in a mixed rookie/devy pool in the first two rounds of the draft. If you don't nominate college players, you can't take any. The overall pool is somewhat depleted but not like a full devy. (League is 1QB, PPR, TEP)

Here are the 2024 rookies selected as devies and where they went in drafts:

MHJR - 1.01 in 2023
Allen - 2.01 in 2022
Nabers - 2.01 in 2023 (me!)
Bowers - 2.02 in 2022 (me!)
Worthy - 2.05 in 2023
CW - 2.06 in 2023
Shipley - 2.06 in 2022
Odunze - 2.10 in 2023 (my 11 year old daughter  )
Maye - 2.11 in 2023
Franklin - 2.12 in 2023

Adrian Martinez went in the 1st round in one of mine a couple years ago. Ouch

Call me coward, but that's why I've stayed away from Devy leagues so far. I don't know if I'm ready to dig that much into college rosters.

My Devy league is not contract, but goes much deeper than that as far as Devy players.
5 round draft every year, 10 team, so up to 50 college/ high school players get picked every year.
I have 10 picks total this year, three 1sts, so far I have spent my three 1st round picks on:

Bryce Underwood 2025 #1 player and QB, Auburn commit
DJ Lagway, QB, Florida #2 QB in 2024 freshman class
Nate Frazier, RB, Georgia #2 RB in 2024 freshman class.

I drafted Jeremiah Smith, 2024 freshman class #1 WR and player in last year's 2023 draft

I’m probably on an island here but I think Devy leagues suck.

Actually I don't think you're on an island. There are two things about it that sort of suck: 1) basically none of the draft/rookie information is all that useful. (Mock drafts, ADP, etc don't apply) and 2) it's nearly impossible (esp. with the salary cap aspect) to find replacement managers if someone bails.

However on the plus side there is something very enjoyable about picking a player a year or two out and having him hit. Also I enjoy watching the devy players I have rostered finish out their college careers and go through the draft process.

This is all accurate. I took Bijan and Gibbs in the initial startup devy draft in one league after their freshman years. Was awesome watching and waiting. Also took Bowers after his freshman year. Same thing. You get to turn on a college game and watch your crops grow. Or just check box scores.

But.... it cuts the other way as well. As I said above: Rattler, Howell, Van Dyke... I'm seeing a trend here. Add in Sean Tucker as a bust. I imagine there are stories of Treadwell from devy leagues. I remember having Samaje Perine on the Chubb level in college and then...

Question: do you keep these guys when they get to the pros as well? Get them as Freshmen and keep them until they retire?

Pretty much. Every league is different but every college player is eligible in your standard rookie draft. It's really hard to spend a 1st round pick on a guy that doesn't accumulate points for a couple of years but it happens a lot.

Sounds very hard, but also very fun if you can get the right team assembled.

QB: Jordan Love/Dak Prescott/Aidan O'Connell

RB: Jonathan Taylor/Isaih Pacheco/Zamir White/Jonathan Brooks/Kendre Miller/Tyrone Tracy/Bucky Irving/Pierre Strong/Dylan Laube

WR: CeeDee Lamb/Brandon Aiyuk/Drake London/Brian Thomas JR/Ladd McConkey/Javon Baker/Dontayvion Wicks/Darius Slayton/Malik Washington/Greg Dortch/Cedric Tillman

Sort of, though it plays like dynasty. I have seen devy players traded before they ever reach the NFL.
So from the time you pick them, they are on your team until you trade them, cut them, whatever, just like dynasty.

Many leagues are called C2C, which means College to Canton.
So you can have them forever if you want.

In my league, you don't even have to wait for them to be freshman in college.
Arch Manning was drafted 2 years before he enrolled at Texas.
I drafted 2 high school players in 2023, who will be freshman in 2024.
I drafted one player in this year's draft who will not start college until 2025.

I'm also eyeing up the 2026 class' #1 WR recruit, might take him in later rounds, Chris Henry Jr.
He is the #1 prospect in the 2026 class right now, 6'5", 205 pounds, as a sophomore in high school.

I thought C2C was a different type of scoring with college stats involved

Lmao as a high school teacher I'll draft one of the kids and tell the kid to stay out of trouble or else...
