This is more about TEN taking an RB on Day 1 of FA, says a lot about their priorities being that active despite Spears being "made of the right #$%@." I've been trying to buy Spears for a first all year and once Henry was gone, it was a forgone conclusion that they were handing the keys to the backfield over to Spears. Not so much anymore. He's better than Pollard IMO but IMO play style is pretty similar, they can do a little bit of everything. That's the last thing any Spears owner wanted going into FA, big downgrade IMO.

Right - but again, I still don't think that's surprising (at least not to me) - I thought Darnold could definitely be in play if they lost Cousins, and added him where available last week.

Darnold spent last year learning from the best offensive coaching staff of his pro career (Shanahan) and getting his feet (slightly) wet in that system. It's very similar to McVay and therefore O'Connells - this is not a far leap to make. At the core of it, it's a ball-out quick-hit system where the reads are almost pre-determined for you by the coverage. What KOC needs is a triggerman who can make the read quickly, and deliver the ball accurately.

Frankly, it was much more surprising that people were trying to suggest Fields would be a fit for that system (or for Payton's in Denver). It's not his game.

And I still expect them to be aggressive about adding somebody in the draft.

This. If anything it is clear that they will be aggressive in the draft. I don't think anyone is stoked that Darnold would start the year as the starter but you have to have a backup plan if the draft doesn't go according to plan or even if it does, having options so you don't have to throw the rookie out there if they aren't ready. There really isn't many options out there from a bridge standpoint, I would've rather had Minshew but eh not a huge deal. IMO this is better than trotting out Dobbs and/or Mullins last year.

I don't think Jefferson signs an extension with the way the GM is currently taking things. This is a blow it up and try for top 3 pick next year type move, he'd play out his 5th year option.

Which rookie QB? The top 3 guys would be too much to move up for, so we're rolling the device on McCarthy, Bo Nix, or Penix. If staff is convinced one of those guys can 100% be a franchise QB under the development of KoC then great. If they're just taking one because they're available then we'll be in even a worse boat with a failed QB

Yeah but don't worry. Now that we have Darnold, teams will have NO IDEA of our desperate plight to move up and it will be reasonably priced! We DEFINITELY didn't paint ourselves into a corner of desperation. That desperation is not at all why Darnold got 10M. As you said, everything is fine!

It's a general rule. Entering the NFL draft, you definitely want to put yourself into a position of glaring need with a desire to move up. That way, the other teams see your plight and extend some help, give you some cheap deals to get you the franchise guy.

Everyone knows the Vikings are after a rookie QB once Kirk left. It's pretty obvious, no one is trading up to top 3 QB range and not taking a QB.

I'm thinking we either stay near #11 and take McCarthy or trade up to the top 3 or 4 to get Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels. I'd love either of those options.

I also don't think the Vikings are in a rebuild. Jefferson will be fine signing a new contract for record numbers. Darnold can get him the ball until the rookie is ready to roll.

To be fair I don't think anyone is giving anyone a "deal" to get into the top 5, it'll take a king's ransom with the QB talent this year. Also the Pats did the same thing signing Brissett, Raiders with Minshew. Denver in the same position, Commanders probably in the same position, maybe even Giants, Saints, Seahawks. There are a lot of teams that are going to be vying for a top 3 pick this year and as always with a good QB draft yeah we're going to have to pay up. I'd much rather pay up to get into the top 3 than sit at 11 or wait until the 2nd round.

I don't have a crystal ball to know how JJ feels about all this but in the four games he played without Cousins (he got knocked out with a chest injury vs Vegas) last year he averaged 11 targets, 7.5 Rec, 119 yds and a TD every other game with Nick Mullens as his QB. Not sure it matters, JJ is gonna get open just throw him the ball. Do we need another "Randy Ratio?"
