Tyjae Spears for late 1st?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Tyjae Spears for late 1st?

Postby Dan49erFaithful » Sat Jan 13, 2024 8:24 am

8 team SF league (expanding to 10 this off-season)

So my team is emerging from a rebuild and I’m looking to shore up my RB position behind Hall & Williams. I have the 2.02 (10th overall, so I’m calling it a late 1st since we’re expanding to 10 teams this year).
I was very impressed with Spears last year and with Henry gone he has plenty of potential. I am a little worried about a coaching change but the upside is there.
I offered him #10 for him and he responded saying “fair” but hasn’t made his decision yet.

You guys think this is a good move for me? With such a thin rookie class at RB I feel like this might be prudent.
I have 1.03 1.06 and 2.01 (#9) as well.

Spears seems like a RBBC type to me and I don't think he will have a big workload. Either way, the value is fine here if you are high on him. It's a gamble, but I doubt you land him for less.

So you think they bring someone else in to handle the ground work? I could see a veteran maybe, but can’t see them using good draft cap on the position

They probably get a pounder from the veteran market. I doubt they spend draft capital on the position.

I'm still optimistic about Spears. But not buying any RBs at this time of year.

Spears feels like a lower level asset in a 10-team format who might not ever be a consistent fantasy or real-life starter. New coaching staff may draft "their RB" also. We shall see but I like this year's class enough to hold the 1.10.

Is it just me or does Spears smell alot like Mattison this time last year? Nice upside, might get a chance to lead a backfield but it could be crowded and he cant slip up

Need to see who they hire as HC and also what FA moves they make. My guess is that they do a thunder and lightning type thing (Monty/Gibbs, Mostert/Achane) with Spears as the lightening.

I don't expect Spears to be a top-12 RB for FF. But I think he can absolutely be FF relevant and I'd love to roster him as a RB3. What might be missed by some is that as a rookie he was targeted 70 times in the passing game. That's high end passing game participation on a low volume passing team. His carry numbers were very low. But assuming Henry goes there are a lot of carries to spread around. At ~12 carries and 4 targets per game he becomes RB2/flex worthy on a weekly basis. I don't think those numbers are unrealistic.
