Tank Dell - Never Not Open

Postby Cameron Giles » Mon Nov 06, 2023 7:53 am

It seems overdue for reaction on Tank Dell. He's been one of the best players in this rookie class so far, and continues to overachieve expectations, and frankly defy conventional logic.

Before the draft, Dell had a long list of potential red flags.

- Small school prospect at Houston
- 40th percentile breakout age at a small school
- Starts his rookie season as a 24-year-old
- 5'8, 165.
- Only ran a 4.49 40 time with his size.

Yet, none of this has seemed to matter.

+ Houston gave him Day 2 pedigree
+ C.J. Stroud personally advocated for the Texans to draft him after developing a connection with him at the draft combine
+ If you buy into ESPN/538 Analytics, Tank Dell currently has the 4th highest Open Score in the NFL.
+ By those same metrics, Dell is graded as the best rookie WR in the class and the 7th best WR this season.
+ Currently WR20 in PPG on the season.
+ Currently WR36 on KTC.
+ On pace for 64/1038/9 as a rookie for 16 games.
+ In three games with at least five targets, Dell has posted lines of 6/114/2 (vs. Tampa), 5/145/1 (vs. Jacksonville), and 7/72/1 (vs. Indianapolis).

Let's see what everyone's thoughts are on Dell going forward. With his route running and separation ability, his ceiling could be much higher than anticipated, especially being attached at the hip to a potential gamechanger in C.J. Stroud.

I put him on the block for a 1st, but idk, I’m starting to think I’d rather just keep him. He’s in a good situation and producing well already.

He could definitely wind up on top of the Texans rookie receiving yards list prior to week 18 (ahead of Andre Johnson and Nuk). He and Stroud are clearly on the same wavelength. Only question for me is whether he can stay healthy at that size. Being an older rookie also probably will put a lower cap on his trade value...may just be one of those guys who retires on my team.

I sent him and Jeudy for Addison before Week 1.

The other owner thinks he won the trade now

(hey, maybe he did...)

Jeudy is fantasy snot. Basically the trade was Dell for Addison. I'd call that fair.

I think most leagues have someone who would still give a 2nd for Jeudy. So Addison for Dell + 2nd. Fine deal.

The TY Hilton comparisons have certainly come to life. He’s here to stay no doubt about it.

Second straight game with 10+ targets for a 6/56/1 line. He's now averaging 23.3 fantasy points in four games with 5+ targets. He looks like an absolute stud right now.

Had a lot of buzz in camp.. I’m mad I don’t have more shares as a Texans fan. Guess I bought into the same old Texans. He’s good though and they definitely have a connection. Only major concern, for me, is do they spend big on a Higgins or draft someone they feel is a true number one but they have some other needs.
They need the Browns to start losing. But no MHJr for sure

I'm not all that concerned about who they bring in. Nico Collins is a very good WR imo. He's similar to Pittman and would be the WR1 on most teams. However, Tank is stealing the show and proving he can also be a go-to WR.

This is absurd, did not see this one coming. I assumed that the main pass catchers on HOU were yet to be on the roster... and Dell's size scared me away. I had some shares of Downs and didn't want to load up on small receivers (had Atwell at some points also)... but Dell appears to be a perfect fit for Stroud. He's Stroud's ARSB.

Color me wrong on this one!
