This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Russ for future picks

Postby mzkp54 » Wed Aug 30, 2023 9:43 am

Blowing up a team. Have sold pretty much everything for picks. Have 4 1sts and 2-3 2nds in each of '24, '25, 26.

Have an offer to give Russ for a '26 1st and 2nd. Have been shopping him and not getting much interest- definitely nothing close to a 1st and 2nd. Would you cash out here, or hold out and hope he rebounds?

I'm assuming this is a SF league and not for any teams in your sig?

I'd take it. I have zero belief Russ returns to his SEA level of performance and even if he rebounds a bit this year his value will likely never be more than this offer you're getting. It's definitely a very long term payoff, but if this is truly a long haul rebuild I'd take it.

Id probably do it as I don't believe in Russ but geez... blowing up your team for picks 3 years out.

I just hate it being in 2026. So far away.

I'd probably hold and hope that he bounces back to some degree. His contract alone should make it so he continues to be worth a back-end 1st, even if the production isn't what it once was

Man, that’s rough. Can you imagine them being the 1.12 and 2.12 3 years out? Would seem awful.

That said would you rather have a 2024 mid 2nd? That’s about all he is going for right now.

I’m usually all about the buy low, but this time I have my doubts. He looks very not right mentally to me.

I don't think this deal makes any sense. 2026!? Hold and hope Wilson hits early with Peyton and a better offer will come. If not, I doubt this offer is going anywhere in the coming weeks because that manager could care less about that pick any time soon. Always risky for a league to allow 1sts being moved so far out. Hopefully that manager never leaves the league.

We’re in year 13 so I’m not worried about it being a future pick. The league is incredibly active (I have 36 trades since March), so future picks are all over the place and aren’t really discounted.

My rebuild philosophy is generally to try and monopolize the draft pick market so I can set the asking price. I’ve committed to a multi year rebuild, but the way it usually plays out is by that point I’m contending and have a ton of picks. That’s what I hope at least haha.

But yeah- I wish I could get something sooner but no one is offering more than a 2nd for him in ‘24 or ‘25

That certainly makes the pick more valuable based on what you are saying about the league and good to know the managers are secure. It still seems like you are losing value but I understand the concern around Wilson. I still think you hold, hope he hits early and shop again. Seems like the 2026 1st will still be an option come week 3 or 4?

The pick doesn't make much sense seeing how far out the pick is. I'd pass. Hopefully he rebounds and his value goes up for you.

There are ways to rebuild without having to wait years to be competitive.
I mean I have added 4 1sts and 3 2nds in ‘24 and 4 1sts and 2 2nds in ‘25 already. Another rebuilder already has 4 ‘24 1sts and we have our few “never trading picks folks”, so I’m running out of people to trade me picks before ‘26 haha. I think I’ll be competitive before then with all the draft capital I’ve added- just trying to figure out how to get the most value for Russ when no one wants him.

Yeah it sounds like you're set up well for the future. If getting Russ's points off of your roster would help you secure the 1.01 next year, that might be an added incentive.

I get your logic. It's just hard for a pick 3 years out to move the needle.

Ended up passing on the future picks- going to try and shop him a bit more. Would you take a single late '24 1st for him if I could get it?

for sure.

i would have taken the '26 1st and 2nd though: i think russ will bounce back some, but not spectacularly enough to give you a much better return, and with all the picks you already have, kicking this specific can down the road is not a big deal. not to mention the chances of that 1st turning out to be very early.

He wanted me to add a bunch of little stuff to get the 1 and 2. I still may send it back straight up for them, but trying to get a sooner pick first

Russ will bounce back a bit but not to let him “cook”. He will be more of a sous chef at this point.
