Anyone do a League Tycoon Salary cap league? Strategies?

Postby hockeyBjj » Sat Aug 26, 2023 9:11 am

Experienced dynasty player, but this will be my first dynasty salary cap league. 10 teams. Slow draft starts tomorrow.

Any general strategies? Traps to look out for?

The winning bid during the auction draft becomes their salary. Players can be assigned 1-5 year contracts. Each year their salary goes up by 10%. If a player is dropped their contract is dead money.

Go for those young guns and get them on 4 year contracts? Avoid the super studs like Jefferson because they’ll be peak value during the auction and then the price increase leaves you in cap hell even if he’s producing?

This is going to be very league dependent. Some leagues really overvalue youth in salary cap/contract leagues and some absolutely dont. The best advice is to stay flexible during the draft. There will always be players that nobody in your league values. Dont be afraid to bid on somebody you arent interested in if they are going for peanuts. Also dont be the person with half your salary cap left at the end of the draft because you were afraid to overbid.

Played in a similar league style for a long time… I always tried to have 75% of my roster on low-cost contracts (either because they were drafted as rookies or because they were adds from the waiver wire) and then spent a lot on a few key high end players. But that was because of the annual free agent auction where you bid on the free agents whose contracts were up.

To get there I always went all-in to get early rookie picks (low cost contracts). There were always players who were way under-priced in the annual auction… don’t be afraid to be flexible and pay for them even if they weren’t your first choice. And then church then for early rookie picks (usually trading your 1st/2nd and a player for someone’s 1st/2nd that will likely be early).

Slow draft, and so far with how there's 215 available for the auction, and then salary cap is actually $315 (the logic is $100 is held in reserve for FA adds and trades), I went Justin Jefferson for $63 and Jamar Chase for $59. After the draft is over and we have $315 cap hit, proportionally those guys are like 50% less than they'd be if they hit open-air market with all the cap room to play with... right? Cap even goes up 10% each year so the 10% increase on big dogs contracts I think will just get lost in the wash.

Maybe I'm overthinking things, maybe I'm not, but my team is gonna start out with a 2 stud backbone and now I gotta try and find some affordable roster fillers. Bench will probably be nothing but dollar guys and then hopefully next year's rookie draft I can hit and still have two super stud WRs in their prime.
