Position Valuations in Weird League Format

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Position Valuations in Weird League Format

Postby Killabrewster » Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:46 am

So I don't have any specific player advice, I'm moreso asking for opinions as to how I should be valuing each position for my upcoming startup draft in two weeks in a new league with a crazy roster format.

Basically, our old league ended (we used an Empire format, so someone won back-to-back and the league reset) and everyone decided we wanted to make a longer term league with a crazy set of rules to try to throw some wrenches into how everyone builds rosters and values players. There are many other wrinkles, but specifically, I'm trying to figure out how to manage my draft against this roster wrinkle:

Each preseason, a random wheel is spun to determine the starting roster for the year. Options are as follows:
- 25%: "Standard" roster (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX, 1 D)
- 25%: Superflex (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Superflex, 1 Flex, 1 D)
- 20%: All Flex (2 Superflex, 7 Flex, 1 D)
- 15%: Extra RB (1 QB, 3 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 D)
- 15%: Extra TE (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE, 1 Flex, 1 D)

The same result cannot be used two years in a row.

So how would you go about valuing each position? I've never gone through the exercise of quantifying players based on replacement value or anything like that. I THINK this mainly bumps QB value and slightly hurts TE value, but I'm not sure. Curious to hear other people's thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I think there are far too many variables to really have any clue on how to plan. That said I want a crapload of youth at WR and RB. Doesn't really bump QB to me. I just want the best players
I am just a guy sharing some thoughts

There is a lot of different outcomes with the format changing yearly and not doubling up back to back. With the SF format not being a for sure, RB looks to be the most valuable position across the board based on all the possible outcomes. RB would be the top position for me.

I'd want to ensure I have two good QBs, one elite te, and one good TE.

Basically in years where it's 1 QB, I'm gonna lose out some.value in that QB2 spot because he's on the bench, and in years that it's SF ill play a position player in the SF on bye weeks.

In years when it's 1 TE ill consider playing my second TE as flex, in years when it's 2 TE, I'll have a distinct advantage.

Is it 12 team? Sorry if I missed that but it’s important.

Interesting, with 45% chance of Superflex and if you do have Superflex the following year is only 20 or 25% chance of SF, I wouldn’t go 2 heavy on qbs. Obviously you have no idea how other are going to play this but if just want to make sure I have 2 decent qbs.

Outside of qb, I think I’d just draft as if it’s a typical league, focus on wr if you can since they’ll have plenty of value in any format. Don’t worry about the 2te at all, I’d even devalue te a bit since 20% chance no te and only 15% 2te.

Cool idea.

Forgot about that part. Yes, it's a 12-team league.

My thought was that QB value is somewhere near the median between 1QB and SF values. Also had a similar thought to TE -- originally the TE made me think to go after them, but more often than not, they are less important. Thanks for the input!

Interesting. Was thinking about going heavier on WR, but I think you may be right about RB -- the 3RB years (only 15% chance) and the all Flex years they become very valuable. Thank you.

This format is crazy. Seems like you got to take each year separately. I would just have a well balanced team that touches all areas
Team 1
Dynasty 10 team, 22 roster + 6 Taxi, PPR
1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 Flex, 1 TE, K, Def

QB: Love, Goff, Fields
RB: Bijan, Montgomery, Kamara, Ford, K Herbert, Zeke, Mattison
WR: Jefferson, Olave, London, Ridley, Sutton, Shaheed
TE: Kincaid, Kittle, Freiermuth
K: Tucker, Sanders
DEF: CLE

Taxi: Charbs, K Mitchell, Demercado, QJ, D Douglas, W Robinson, Hooker

Picks
2024: 1.03, 3.06, 3.09, 4.09
2025: 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5
2026: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Team 2
Dynasty 10 team, 22 man roster + 6 Taxi, PPR, SF and TEP
1QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 S Flex

QB: Allen, Goff, Watson, Jones
RB: K Williams, B Robinson, Chubb, Ford, Mostert, A Gibson, Dillon, Pierce, Zeke
WR: Olave, T Hill, Addison, D Adams, C Watson, D Johnson, G Davis, OBJ
TE: Kincaid, Kmet, Goedert

Taxi: Mitchell, DTR, Mims, K Miller, Douglas, Vaughn

Picks
2024: 1.08, 3.02, 3.09
2025: 1, 3, 4, 5
2026: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5
