Purdy vs Lance 2023
Re: Purdy vs Lance 2023
If Trey Lance is traded, would there be any Dead Cap hit? I thought that was for players cut only.
Regarding salary, SF could probably get an experienced backup QB cheaper than Trey Lance salary and cap hit.
I think SF will go into the off-season with an expectation on who will be their 2023 starter. I also think it will hinge on Purdy's play the rest of the post season. If he plays well, and SF wants to move forward with him as starting QB, then I think SF trades Lance.
Not sure what Lance trade value would be. There are planty of Qb needy teams, so I think they'd get a good 2nd at worst for him.

Pre June 1 Cut
$20,153,107 Dead Cap
-$10,851,673 in Cap savings
Post June 1 Cut
$14,612,151 Dead Cap
-$5,310,717 Cap Savings
Pre June 1 Trade
$11,081,912 Dead Cap
-$1,780,478 Cap Savings
Post June 1 Trade
$5,540,956 Dead Cap
$3,760,478 Cap Savings
So ya there's a difference between Cut/Trade, and trading with a Pre June 1 designation would result in a minor cap charge under $2M, and a Post June 1 trade would save a little under $4M
They'll have no issue trading him from a cap perspective if that's what they decide to do.

In this case, is "Cap Savings" going against the 2023 Salary Cap, and is the dead money still charged to the 2024 Salary Cap?
Or is this dead cap for 2023, and the cap savings a net/loss thing for 2023?

Foles was also on his 3rd contract.hankmurphy wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 4:15 pm When Nick Foles won the Super Bowl he didn’t keep the job over an injured Carson Wentz. San Francisco spent a lot of draft capital on Trey Lance.

I think there's a non-zero chance the 49ers go after a veteran QB in the offseason. This is a win-now team and they would be smart to end the debate between Purdy and Lance and bring in an unquestioned starter. I don't know how the number would work, but if they could find a way to bring Aaron Rodgers to San Francisco, they are easily the team to beat in the NFC next season.
If they don't, then I think Purdy fits the offense better.

Purdy is 40 times cheaper though, you have to factor in what you could do with the extra 30 million in cap space if you keep Purdy over Rodgers. Not saying they wouldn't be better off doing it, just that it's not a 1 for 1 trade off.Cameron Giles wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 6:07 am I think there's a non-zero chance the 49ers go after a veteran QB in the offseason. And they still have to extend Bosa and CMC. Seems unlikely they go after a vet.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 6:31 amPurdy is 40 times cheaper though, you have to factor in what you could do with the extra 30 million in cap space if you keep Purdy over Rodgers. Aren't they the team to beat already?Cameron Giles wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 6:07 am I think there's a non-zero chance the 49ers go after a veteran QB in the offseason. CMC is under contract for another 3 years, they don't need to extend him at all. SF is #14 in cap space and Bosa is the only key player in need of a new deal, and obviously it will be a big one but they can still make a vet QB deal work on the cap if they want to go that route.BabyChark23 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 6:57 am And they still have to extend Bosa and CMC. You'd think they would want to re-sign McGlinchey, too. Either that, or they need to replace him via FA or draft, and getting a RT of that caliber that knows your system inside out via that route would prove tough.bjd5211 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 7:52 amCMC is under contract for another 3 years, they don't need to extend him at all. I'd argue he's a key player for their team and offense. Not to the level Bosa is, but someone they certainly wold want to keep.
