Of Course . I was watching the game live. Tee Higgins caught a short pass and turned up field and right into the facemask/chest area of Hamlin. He popped up fast but looked a bit wobbly and immediately fell back unconscious .
I'd hate to speculate, or spread false information, so if there's someone with more medical knowledge that wants to chime-in that would be great. But I can say, there is a type of injury that I'm not sure exactly what it's called, but basically is the result of blunt-force trauma to the heart/chest. If you're hit hard enough there, it can literally stop your heart. A 100 mph fastball to the heart could cause the same injury.

I saw what was happening on the field before I saw the replay of the hit, and when I saw the video it's clear Higgins' chest pads and helmet slam into Hamlin's chest area pretty hard. I would not be surprised if this is eventually identified as what happened to him.
Good news that his vitals are stable, and hopeful for his full recovery.

Also read that he had a small foundation in Pittsburgh that provided toys to underprivileged kids. Apparently, the site has crashed under the weight of all the donations that are pouring in tonight. Hopefully some good can come from this terrible situation.
You're referring to commotio cordis. Would be pretty rare for someone his age, but it would definitely make sense, especially considering the tidbits of them having used an AED on him on the field, meaning it's definitely something cardiac related.
This entire situation is just tragic beyond belief. I really hope we wake up tomorrow with better news for him.and his family.

I know nobody is thinking about fantasy right now, but I thought I'd mention 2 of my leagues have already decided to declare the championship game a tie, and to split the winnings, before hearing how the NFL handles the possible postponement of the game, if it takes place at all (though I doubt the NFL fully cancels it). Again, not important at all for real life, but it does seem fitting to me that folks don't want to "benefit" from the terrible situation that occurred.
That is what I have seen to be the diagnosis.
Dr. Brian Sutterer explains.
It has to do with where you get hit + the timing of the hit in the heartbeat rhythm cycle.

Yes, still critical but stable condition I believe.

These aren't mutually exclusive. Critical condition refers to his condition and sable refers to if he's getting worse or improving.

So as of right now he's not in good shape, but hes not getting worse for now.

Last I saw he was put in a medically induced sleep to insert a breathing tube. As expected it's being reported as a cardiac arrest.

I've read that his vitals are stable, but I've yet to hear that he's breathing on his own. Obviously he's not with a breathing tube, but before that, I never heard if he was ever breathing on his own.

Praying that he makes it through this. Just can't imagine what him and his family are going through.

It's been great to see everyone donating to his foundation. I think it's over 3 million right now.

At this rate I think the league is going to postpone Week 18. No way can you expect all of these teams and coaches to go to work this week the longer we wait without an update.

Game will not be resumed this week, but final decision has not been made on the game.

Week 18 will go on as scheduled.

[Field Yates] The Bills and Bengals will not be resumed this week. As of now, it is TBD whether the game will be resumed at a later time. As of now, there are no changes to the Week 18 schedule.

Doesn't seem possible to fit the game in between this Sunday and the playoffs (next Sunday). Only logical conclusion is game is cancelled and won't be played.

If week 18 is unchanged, the only way to add back the game would likely be by pushing back the playoffs and eliminating the bye week prior to Superbowl (as done in 2001-2002 season following Sept 11 resulted in a cancelled week). This has complications due to broadcasting rights and a few other things. I think its far more likely that the game is cancelled and the win % is just used. But again, this stuff really doesn't matter compared to the health and recovery of Hamlin.

I think the NFL bigger concern is getting the week 18 games played as scheduled and the rest of the NFL season to proceed as scheduled. To a lesser concern, is the Bills vs Cincy week 17 game, that is only 1 game which they have options for dealing with.

Hamlin was resuscitated twice, once in field and once in hospital. Is currently in prone position to take pressure off lungs and is sedated. He has a long way to go.

They should push the playoffs back. IF the Bills win, and KC wins, the Bills would lose the bye, due to this situation. KC would be sitting at 14-3, and the Bills at 13-3. The Bills hold the tie breaker. There's the break between the title games and the SB, like you said. That's what should be done.

The Bengals have a chance for the bye as well. If they had defeated the Bills last night then all they would need is a win this week and a KC loss. It wouldn't matter if the Bills won week 18.
