So 8 RB, 8 WR, 3 TE, 3 QB (which is still probably too much for most teams), DST, K? Feels like that max requirement makes every team the same build

I started a local 16 team league several years ago where I introduced dynasty and IDP to most of the owners for the first time. To help guide them, we put in max and minimum rules for offensive and defensive players, basically to force them to carry enough IDPs and assure that they would have offensive free agents available.

Twice over the past decade I proposed that we could eliminate the limits now that we were all veteran dynasty and idp players, but both times 3/4 of the league wanted to keep it. So it goes.

Details: 30 man roster, 2 taxi; start qb, rb, 2wr, te, 2 flex, k, 2dl, 2lb, 2db, 2 flex. (8 off, 8 idp, 16 total starters)
Roster limit rule: minimum of 8 idp, max of 18 off/k.
We cut down to 25 pre-fantasy draft with the same limit.

Personally I'm not a fan of positional limits. Especially being there is fresh blood coming in every year with rookies (some years are better than others though). In leagues where I've seen limits like these, the teams hoarding generally don't benefit too much. You can still only start the same number as other owners and it also means that owner is weaker at other positions.

The only time I've ever had positional limits that I liked was when my league first started and we had team defenses. As one other user said, there's only 32 defenses and no new ones coming in as rookies. There it made sense to have limits to avoid hoarding as there is no new fresh blood ever. Fortunately we eliminated defenses after a couple years anyway.

I hear all the people passionately against them but honestly its just a rule you have to work around. All these things could be said for any limiting rules. 24 man roster limit? Why not 34 man? 24 man rosters just protect people who draft poorly and 34 man roster will promote trading. No FA signings? Unlimited? Blind Bid? Taxi squad or no taxi? Its all just rules people have to work around and really if most want it just leave it be because at the end of the day its just not that big of a deal.

Training wheels is a great way to put it. I've only used it once, when I started a league with a bunch of guys that were both new to dynasty and sf. Basically just didn't want a crazy swing in value because it took some guys longer to catch up to value of QBs than others. As planned, we increased QB limit to 5 the next year, and got rid of it after that.

I think that's probably the only use of roster limits I support. A temporary basis for a green league.
Dynasty player since 2002.
I probably should have done something more productive with that time...
