Superflex Rookie Draft Strategy w/ Four Firsts

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Superflex Rookie Draft Strategy w/ Four Firsts

Postby UnsafeAtAnySpd » Wed Apr 21, 2021 4:26 am

Of my 15+ fantasy leagues, this one in particular has me the most 'worried' about how to approach the draft. League is going into its 6th year, and since winning year one, I've managed to be a fringe playoff team annually. Outside of the big 5 QBs, this class isn't looking to have much guarenteed depth.

But to try to keep this short...
Format: 32 team (2 copy) Superflex half-ppr (QB/1RB/1WR/1TE/SFlex/3Flex)

Picks: 1.09, 1.26, 1.28, 1.29, 2.26, 2.27, some 3/4/5s
(plus all future picks)

Roster:
QB: Allen, Mayfield, Taysom, Cam
RB: Gibson, Hunt, Moss, Coleman, Kerryon, Duke, McKinnon, Darell Williams, Richard, D. Washington
WR: Higgins, Boyd, Diontae, Chark, Ruggs, Ward, Coulter
TE: Logan Thomas, Irv Smith, Njoku, Oliver, warring, Butler

Obviously some good drop candidates for the picks at least 😅

I feel like that first pick will likely have one of the top 2 RBs available, but do I pass up a QB in 16 team equivalent superflex? How would you approach this draft? Sell picks off now maybe? Thanks.

I would go BPA and if one of the top QBs ends up being available with your first pick, I would grab him for the future. You have three starters which is huge and two young options, but who knows how many years Newton remains a starter. From there, the draft will fall how it falls and BPA will maximize value.

If the choice is between Mac Jones and a top2 RB, I'm probably taking the RB for your team. If the choice is Lance or RB, I'm probably taking Lance.

OTOH, if you want to consider WRs, I would definitely make the pitch for Chase if he's available, instead of any RB or Jones.

This is the type of league that separates the pros from the amateurs!!

16 team SF essentially I am quite easily taking whatever qb is there over the RBs. It’s just too important a position and if you’re not looking at qb I’d look to trade down instead. Only starting 1 rb in a deepish format I wouldn’t build around rb much anyways. The draft is plenty deep enough at wr where you’ll get a decent prospect with your 2nd 1st. You have a nice young build, not sure why you’re so worried!

Appreciate the advice. Post NFL draft, I was so hoping Lance would be there, but alas I ended up taking Harris with that first pick. Likely looking for three shots at WRs with the next ones.

Overall I did really like how the NFL draft played out for my team too.

Mac Jones hurts Cam, but he could hold him off and end up in a good spot next year if he can (somehow) stay healthy.

Gibson and Moss didn't get any competition. Even Coleman could still have a good role in New York.

Boyd and Higgins value dinged by the Chase addition (probably more the former than the latter), but my other receivers still looking solid. Even Ruggs still has a good shot I'd say.

Looks like Logan Thomas still the guy at TE in Washington. Remains to be seen if Fitz looks his way with the other receiving options though.

None of my core starters are ready to age out either. Excited to see who drops to me at these coming firsts. Looking at it, depth of guys I like drops off right after my last first.

FWIW, I ended up trading away the 1.28 and 2.27 for Sutton (him and Boyd the old men of my WR grouping ). Otherwise, draft so far:
1.09 Harris, Najee PIT
1.26 Marshall, Terrace
1.29 Bateman, Rashod

What was 1.01-1.08? Did you pass on one of the 4 QBs or did they go in order before you?

I passed on Wilson. I know that was dumb in this format and I'll probably regret it down the line, but for some reason I'm pretty down on him. Najee's volume this year I think could help me be pretty competitive. We'll see. First round went like this:

1.01 Lawrence, Trevor JAC QB (R) (Q)
1.02 Lawrence, Trevor JAC QB (R) (Q)
1.03 Lance, Trey SFO QB (R)
1.04 Fields, Justin CHI QB (R)
1.05 Lance, Trey SFO QB (R)
1.06 Fields, Justin CHI QB (R)
1.07 Harris, Najee PIT RB (R)
1.08 Chase, Ja'Marr CIN WR (R)
1.09 Harris, Najee PIT RB (R)
1.10 Chase, Ja'Marr CIN WR (R)
1.11 Pitts, Kyle ATL TE (R)
1.12 Pitts, Kyle ATL TE (R)
1.13 Etienne, Travis JAC RB (R)
1.14 Wilson, Zach NYJ QB (R)
1.15 Wilson, Zach NYJ QB (R)
1.16 Etienne, Travis JAC RB (R)
1.17 Jones, Mac NEP QB (R)
1.18 Jones, Mac NEP QB (R)
1.19 Smith, DeVonta PHI WR (R)
