KC and running the ball

Postby Londondynasty » Mon Nov 09, 2020 1:56 am

A short term issue, or are they just going to use Mahomes rather than give their RBs any sort of decent workload?

WR: Adams, Keenan Allen, Evans, Mooney, Juju, Corey Davis, G.Davis, Van Jefferson, Chark, Atwell
TE: Kelce, Waller, Tonyan, Brate, Taysom

Team 2. PPR. 14 teamer. 1qb, 2 rb, 2 wr, 2 wr/rb, 1 wr/te 1 te, k, p, various IDP
QB: Hurts, Ryan, Watson
RB: Barkley, Mixon, CEH, Penny, Gibson, Hunt

With Mahomes and those weapons, the run game will always be game flow dependent

Against the Jets, they had what you would usually say would be a game script favouring the run, but they barely got a look in then either

Like most offenses, they take what the defense gives them. Indy has a good run defense. Three weeks ago CEH had 26 carries for 161 yards. You'll have down weeks too.

If you're expecting a lot of running every week, KC is not the offense for you.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Andy Reid favoring the pass over the run?!?!? Why is this a surprise?

I came here to say this.

Your best bet as an owner of a KC RB would be a KC blowout where guys like CEH & Bell can get rushing stats in the fourth quarter, screen plays, or the occasional goal line carries. I loved CEH when he was drafted to the Chiefs, but that was more of a PPR reasoning. I find that lacking up to this point.

They have the best qb in football, they know it. Why would they go to an rb who's good but not great over just letting mahomes be mahomes and keep developing

Too many good options for the QB. The RB will have some blowup games but otherwise just a steady good floor.

Once Sammy is gone, and Kelce inevitably slows down a bit ceh will get more passing game work and it will be better

So they will not put in another WR?
Plus Watkins has been injured the last 4 games, not like CEH has been booming in the reception-department.

We ought to remember KC has a banged up O-line. Mahomes is great because he can create plays with his scrambling but CEH and Bell will be dependent on blocks being made.

That said the two biggest impediments to CEH’s fantasy success I see are 1. Mahomes deep ball ability limiting the amount of yards needed to be gained by RBs, and 2. Touchdowns will be limited because even in short yardage situations the Chiefs are the most creative red zone team, and are able to find many ways to pass for TDs. Couple that 2nd reason with the banged up O-line and you start to see why there haven’t been many goal line rushes.

I never expected Kansas City to turn into a run-first team, but their usage of CEH has been puzzling at best the past few weeks.

After absolutely dominating Buffalo on the ground 3 weeks ago (26 rushes for 161 yards), he's TOTALED just 19 carries the past 3 weeks (averaging 4.2 ypc). I know they brought in Bell, but he's playing only 1/3rd of the snaps and has just 16 carries himself (averaging 3.4 ypc).

Reid, and Mahomes, were seemingly in love with CEH heading into the draft. He was very clearly a talented pass-catching RB who had very little weaknesses outside of top-end speed. Yet, they don't use him on ANY passing-downs, and continue to give a decent chunk of work to Bell (who looks washed up) and D. Williams (who's JAG). All this while CEH has been wildly successful in nearly every facet of the game.

The good news is he's currently a low-end RB (#10 in .5 PPR leagues) and a serious candidate for positive Touchdown regression (on pace for just 6 TD's in that offense). The bad news is KC doesn't seem to trust him enough in passing situations and won't commit to any semblance of a running game.

Not to detail your argument, it's a good post, but that Buffalo defense is bad and was entirely ok with letting KC run wild. As long as it wasn't Mahomes that game.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Buffalo has been bad against the run all year and also benched two starting D Lineman to send a message, which ended up back firing.

I, like many KC fans, was surprised by how conservative and run based the offense was at times earlier in the season. Someone pointed out that teams have wisely been selling out to stop the downfield passes, which opened up the run more. I think we’re seeing a shift in Mahomes/Reid in that they’re willing to just risk throwing through dime defenses because they know they’re good enough and it’s working.
