Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
Pre-season, it appeared the Vikings intended to compete for the divisional title, despite all the changes. But, the secondary fell apart, while an injury took their bellcow back.
Today, DE Danielle Hunter had season ending injury while they traded DE Yannick Ngakoue for less than they traded for him. Does this portend more moves after a 1-5 start?
Does Cook see his snaps reduced and rack up DNPs?
Do they test their QB options (depth and practice squad) or hunt for a guy for a tryout like Rosen or Haskins?
Aside from Cook and Cousins, what other players would be at risk of being benched?
Imagine a Lawrence to Jefferson combo.

Cousins and Cook aren't in danger of getting benched, barring injury, their contracts protect them because the Vikings are locked into them beyond not just this year but next year. Biggest potential move I could see happening is Thielen hets traded.
Re: Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
Lawrence should just refuse to play for the Jets. It worked for Eli.

I forgot about Cousins' extension. No guarantees after next year. On year left going into next offseason would still make things interesting.
Cook is a "save their best player for next year" bench risk, imo. I wouldn't expect they'd want to be the Giants, with a risk of entering next year without Cook.

They paid Cook and Cousins. The GM and coach need ever win they can to keep their job. They are going to play. Ngakoue was an obvious move because he was going to be gone next year.

His contract is fully guaranteed and runs through 2022. Now they could cut him after next season and only take a $10M Dead Cap hit, but they are still on the hook to pay him $35M cash that year.

"Kirk Cousins signed a two year contract extension with the Vikings worth $66 million on March 16, 2020. Cousins at the time of signing had one year remaining on his old contract worth $30 million making the total package worth $96 million over three years. $61 million is fully guaranteed at signing, including a $30 million signing bonus and Cousins 2020 and 2021 base salaries. If Cousins in on the Vikings roster on the 3rd day of the 2021 league year his 2022 salary, which is currently guaranteed for injury, will become fully guaranteed. The move saved the Vikings $10 million in 2020 cap room."
The site notes he's under contract up to and including the 2022 season, but there would be no guaranteed money for that season. Based on the grid, it appears cutting him would leave a 10 mil dead money hit and save 35 mil. Gives Minnesota options to move on, if they want.

Re: Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
That would be a total Jets move, drafting the wrong guy.
Re: Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
They got a 3rd and a 5th. They probably would have gotten a compensatory 3rd watching him walk anyways. Crappy but hey take what you can get I suppose.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 8:14 pm They paid Cook and Cousins. The GM and coach need ever win they can to keep their job. I’m just going to leave this here. Basically the problem is Cousins.

Re: Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
Cousins is A problem, but he's not THE problem, the Vikings have multiple issues beyond QB.

Nicely written, but I very strongly disagree.jcc6fd wrote: ↑Fri Oct 23, 2020 11:23 am I’m just going to leave this here. Basically the problem is Cousins.

The Vikings DID have most of the pieces in place to be a contender. Teddy's knee blew up, Bradford got hurt. They took a calculated risk. I would've done the same thing. They were too good to get a high draft pick to nab a good rookie, so paying for Cousins was a logical choice.
I think the problem is that many fans and NFL watchers expected Cousins to be Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson. He's not. He's in the class of QBs below that. He's good with good surrounding talent, but not good enough to carry a team on his back. And if they decide to move on from Cousins, they're not on the hook for several years. Remember how long the Ravens had to play Joe Flacco? They couldn't cut or trade him.
Now that the Vikings have waved the white flag on 2020, they are in a good position to restock. They had a lot of draft picks last year and plenty this year. I hope they finish with a bad enough record to get one of those nice rookie QBs and keep Cousins to play in 2021.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.
Re: Minnesota Vikings 2020 plans
I don’t disagree with you that signing Cousins was the best course of action for them. I guess where we might diverge is that I think it’s pretty clear that it hasn’t worked out, and he’s the main reason they can’t beat winning teams. Again not using hindsight I would have done the same thing if I were the Vikings GM
