Yeah. Cook wants 10ish mil a year. Vikings had 12 mil of cap space and reportedly wanting to pay Cook under 10.

Vikings sign Ngakoue, who takes a pay cut to get under that 12 mil cap, with the promise they’ll extend him if he takes the cut off his franchise tag for this year. Don’t think you pay a 2nd for just a 1 year player.

Buy Mattison everywhere
HE may take it. Either that or they tag him. I would think most RB"s over the next few years won't get to 10. The cap is going down, and it may continue to do so for the next few years. I think Gordon money may be the high water mark (not including Mixon, and potentially Kamara) going forward. The Saints are win now, Kamara actually has some leverage right now. I could see the Vikings tagging Cook next year, but I honestly don't know that if he walked, Mattison would be their starting back. He may, but they may also draft help, or sign an cheaper FA like Mack etc. If Cook walks, they need to add another back, so it just depends where, and how much capital they would spend, in money or draft value.

I would not be surprised if Cook signed for around 8 a year, either, in the next week or so. He's taking a real risk with his injury history of hurting his cause if he doesn't get through the year unscathed. 16 million or so guaranteed is life changing money, and with the realities of the cap, and the RB market next year, he might be wise to do it.

These deals are great for dynasty, but awful in a football sense.

Doesn't really matter, teams know what they are doing juggling the cap, and it's going to be going up a lot in a few years when TV deals are done. Rams are getting close to giving Kupp a big extension despite all the massive contracts they've given out recently.

Recent history shows us that's not the case. A lot of these teams have regretted these deals.

But I get a little bit of it. These teams want to win and that's how you get these players on the field.

Mattison's value was always based on Dalvin getting hurt and taking over the job for a season imo, not him being the potential future starter. If they had moved on from Dalvin they probably would have drafted a new RB, not just give the job to Mattison. This really doesn't change much for Mattison's value, if Dalvin gets hurt then Mattison gets a bump, and if he doesn't then Mattison won't do much, same as before the extension.

And then they cut them and move on, it's not a massive hindrance for them spending money (Rams prime example with the Gurley deal).

Not always that simple, especially if there's still dead money or you have to re-sign other players who become more valuable to your team after that contract is signed.

Then they'll just restructure other deals or structure the new deal in a way so the cap hits align properly each year to keep them under cap.
This was going to be year 1 of Gurley's new contract in LA, and they cut him before he played a game, and had given massive deals to Goff and Donald already. It didn't stop them from giving Ramsey the biggest CB deal ever or prevent them from giving Kupp the deal he's reportedly on the verge of receiving.

I love it, Mixon, Kamara, Cook! Good for the RB's. Don't listen to that old curmudgeon Giles   . Gurley had a bum knee, that was certainly an outlier situation. The quality of RB these guys are, are better than anything coming out in the next few years, and it's not close. Good for them. It's good for the game, and the Dynasty landscape as well. Young, talented upcoming youth will be more prone to sticking at the RB position, too, knowing they can still get paid. This precedent being set of getting paid after year 3 is great for the position. Curious to see what happens with Chubb after this year, now, with the Hunt extension and all.

So, how much is Saquon getting next year? Probably in the ballpark of 5/$100M

Not sure he gets much more than CMC. Cap is going down, so I think 17 a year.

Among others, the Rams did the following to free up cap:

Traded Talib
Traded Peters
Cut Gurley
Cut Matthews
Traded Cooks
Weddle retired

It's a lot of adjusting, especially when the deals you give out aren't providing justified value, which Gurley wasn't and Goff isn't so far. Dallas is going through something similar, where they extended Zeke, but his value to the team doesn't match the salary.

Typically, you want to have big extensions lined up at premium positions. RB isn't that, so teams are definitely taking a big risk here.
