He just got it

4 years $80M, $60M guaranteed

They extended Hill last year, reworked Sammy's deal, and drafted Hardman and CEH in the last 2 drafts. They are investing in the offense, and this won't affect his fantasy performance at all.
I agree, but down the line. I don't think Hardman is anything special. My point was, if Jones walks, another FA WR could be brought in, for instance. Mahomes is still going to do well, but obviously if this money was given to the OL, that would be better for him. He threw 50 TD's the year before, and they didn't tie money into the D nearly as much. I would disagree it doesn't affect him at all, it's just on the margins. Watkins, Hardman aren't anything special, and Mahomes will make any average player relevant. Tying up money in the D just prevents upper tier FA's from being signed on offense, so it does affect him to some degree.

If anything this limits how much they can invest into making the D better. It's not like they are ADDING Jones to the D, he's already been there and didn't negatively affect Mahomes production at all... They are just paying Jones more now.

Also Hardman may not be a top 20, but he's an All-Pro return man that helps KC's field positioning. And offensively he is better AND faster than most teams 3rd or 4th options, which is what he is in KC. There will be other draft picks brought in over the years too.

Of course. I just don't see the reasoning behind it being a "good thing" for the offense. I still think Mahomes is QB1 in Dynasty, and not particularly close. If they let Jones walk, that money could have been put into the OL, for example, which would be a better addition in pure fantasy terms.

You'll just have to excuse the Chiefs for trying to build an actual football team instead of a fantasy one...

I think Hardman might be a little bit special, personally. He's got special speed, and impending opportunity - at the very least.

I hated that pick when we made it, but he did seem impressive in some ways as a rookie

I just can't imagine him ever having the route tree to be a consistent fantasy option--a decent real life player sure but you need volume for fantasy. With Watkins (who while frustrating is a better WR IMO who has shown up when we needed it most--2018 and 2019 AFC Champ, Super Bowl) returning I am not sure he has impending opportunity

Good gadget player but if we had picked DK...

KC probably thinks they can draft skill position and Mahomes can elevate them. The only player on that offense who I think they need to re-sign when the time comes is Kelce. Hill is good, but you can find a good WR more than a really good TE.

It’s all fine and dandy to speculate on the impact of a mega deal like this one, it makes for a good conversation. But I think the reality is he will probably be angling for a new deal in 4 or 5 years anyway.

 yeah, that would be scary. I agree, Hardman is a gadget player. He was drafted partly due to the fact they considered him the best returner in the draft. He does not look like a WR that will ever be a consistent option IMO. I think once Watkins goes, they will add another player to fill that role.

If I'm reading it correctly:

2020: $5.3M
2021: $24.8M
2022: $31.4M
2023: $42.4M
2024: $39.9M
2025: $41.9M
2026: $41.9M
2027: $59.9M
2028: $44.4M
2029: $44.9M
2030: $50.4M
2031: $52.4M

This is accurate, so he's not going to cost an absurd amount until 2027, and he's a bargain for the next 3 years. This really was an excellent deal for both sides. Even with that one huge year, they can either restructure around that time to lower the Cap number or just set up their salaries so they can afford to bite the built on the massive number for one year. With the way salaries are going, $45-50M in '28-'31 won't be all that outlandish.

We'll see how the economy does in the next few years. With this virus wreaking havoc, I am not convinced that salaries will continue to escalate at the current rate is has been going in recent years. Next year the cap will most likely freeze or even go down for the first time in a while, and depending on the length and severity of what happens, we could see that continue for several years, or at least see the rise slow down considerably.

The only thing counting against Mahomes in fantasy is game script. The defense has improved and there are games where they will sit on a lead. Additionally opponents are often selling out to stop big plays making games slower and more run based and underneath passing. But yes he’s clearly the best. Russ maybe has an argument but he’s obviously less valuable in dynasty. He does benefit from a worse defense.

Allen and Lamar both have more running production and can score more week to week, but the long term bet has to heavily favor Mahomes. He’s the best passer ever and his reliable floor and ceiling is much safer.
