What do we do if there is no NFL 2020 season?

NFL won't have an auction, the Draft format is too familiar and more importantly made for TV, they aren't changing their #2 event of the entire year after the SB.

Also an auction won't work next year cause teams will just go all in on Lawrence, and then Fields once Lawrence is resolved.

Finally and probably the biggest reason. An auction would have the media and social media going crazy about a group of predominantly black players being auctioned off to predominantly white owners and GMs. That would turn into a PR nightmare for the NFLs big return event after a year away.

There will be a draft exactly as there has always been, they'll want to promote getting back to normalcy once all this passes. The only question is how the order will be decided, and that will probably be in some kind of weighted lottery system.

Schedule coming out May 9th. Not sure how to take it, as that's a bit later than normal, but also the fact that they release it at all could be good. I think the expectation is that there will be adjustments.

I have a hard time envisioning how an auction would work either.

Von Miller has it, too, apparently.

If there were no 2020 season, I'd suspect the 2021 draft order would be determined by some sort of weighted lottery system based on 2019 results.

What are people doing for rookie drafts going forward? Any changes?

We postponed ours based on a vote, and it caused one person to quit the league.

Ours are all done online, so continuing as normal. Obviously I'd avoid in person drafts if you are doing them in the near future.

I think chances for a full NFL season are very slim, even without fans.

My guess is they either try and it goes really badly, or they watch as other leagues struggle and try some of form of abridged season.

But with 55 man rosters, and all the coaches and support personnel, it's gonna be next to the impossible.

Starting to think of a contingency plan for the 2021 draft pick order if there is no 2021 season. I think tiering the picks based on last years records is an idea. Bottom 3 teams in a tier, bottom 4-6, then 7-10, and finally 11-12 for example. Then randomize those tiers. So the draft picks are somewhat indicative of roster strength.

Here’s what we came up with:

Bottom 5 teams are in a lottery. Last place team gets 5 balls, 2nd from last gets 4, 3rd gets 3, 4th gets 2, 5th gets 1. Total of 15 balls. One ball is picked- that team has the 1.01 slot.

Then it’s repeated. 6th from last seed is added, and another 15 balls are added to the mix (minus the team that was already picked) with the same 5-4-3-2-1 format for the remaining teams based on their order of finish.

The process is repeated until each team is awarded a draft spot.

How do you do this remotely, I had thought of something like this, but are you showing on video, for legitimacy?

Our online draft that starts May 3 will still go as planned.
Haven't thought about our local league drafts in August, other than figuring they might be online. We're fortunate to have an amazing Draft Room on mfl.
