Superflex Startup Advice

Postby smithmn » Wed Apr 08, 2020 4:22 am

Good Morning All,

I have been commissioner of a standard, 12 team dynasty league (1 PPR / 1QB) for 6 years now. I have also participated in a different 12 team league since college. The college league just folded, leaving a handful of owners wanting to start up a new league. I have agreed to be the commissioner, but want it to be different than my current league. So, we are doing .5 PPR and Superflex for sure. Here is my question...

Is there a break point where having too many teams makes superflex too challenging? With merging two groups of leagues together, I have a lot of interest. I opened up the league and in one day I have 11 guys signed up. I have FOR SURE four more than want to join. This would make us get up to 16 teams. I know that QBs would become disgustingly valuable in a 16 team league.

Just looking for some advice... is 16 too much for supeflex? Should I try to limit to 14? Or disappoint some dudes and stick with 12...

My suggested roster setup:

QB / RB / RB/ WR / WR / WR / TE / FLX / SFLX
Bench: 9

20 spots total
3 IR spots

Advice appreciated for a first-time superflex player.

The challenge in 16 team superflex would be that every starting NFL QB would be rostered and also their backup. I don't think this is too big of an issue as the main depth you would need would be to roster every QB that has a fighting chance to start. This would mean I would want most of my bench with QBs and my RB/WR/TE depth would suffer greatly.

The one part that I think would make this league very hard would be the 20 roster spots. I would want this expanded so I can take some very long shots at QB due to the fact that the bottom third of the league don't have a set starter and will try a few different guys out. Some teams I can think of off the top of my head would be the Bears (Foles/Trubisky), Patriots (Stidham/draft/FA), Dolphins (Fitzpatrick/FA/draft), Redskins (Haskins/Draft), Bengals (Dalton/Draft), Panthers (Bridgewater long-term?), Chargers (Tyrod/FA/Draft), Bucs (Brady seems like 1-2 year rental) Colts (Rivers 1 year rental), and these teams are iffy Giants, Titans, Jags. I personally like Tannehill and Minshew and think they looked pretty decent, but all these teams could switch up QBs which means backups to the starters need rostered and close to all the QBs drafted by these teams.
12 Team PPR Dynasty. Start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 3 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 K, 1 D, 21 roster spots.

16 isn't too much imo because you can flex any player. Doesn't have to be a QB. But it might be a bit much for most people and therefore you'll restrict any recruits to your league.

I'd reduce it to 14. That also makes it a 13 week season and a 6 team playoff, which is the perfect combination of everything imo.

Appreciate the feedback. Made the decision to reduce to 14 - compromised in the middle.
