Cam Newton Thread - Back to Carolina
Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
They have to release him, there's really only one potential suitor, LAC, and they say they aren't acquiring a vet QB. That could be true, or they could know they can get Cam without giving up anything for him and just waiting on him to get cut.
Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
I dont believe Cam’s value is as low as people make it out to be.
Could easily see him starting for many teams that presumably already have their guy.

Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
I think he's about done. Best years are way behind him. His value is shot. Even if he plays for another team, he's not going to be the same producer, or even close to it ever again, and pretty much everyone knows it. He's getting replaced by a career backup that they paid a fairly large sized sum of money to. That should say quite a bit.

Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
Bridgewater was a first round pick, and a starting QB for the MIN Vikings before suffering a catastrophic Knee injury... wouldn't exactly call him a career backup... and 21 Million a year isn't a whole lot of money for a starting QB in 2020.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 1:48 amI think he's about done. He was a hot FA pickup.. and CAR decided to move on from Cam after 2 years of injury marred play.
That seems much more like impatience than a stock check, and it's not like QBs that were hurried out the door because of question marks of their health have never produced after being chased out of town: Drew Brees (SD), Peyton Manning (IND)
Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
SD and Indy also had Rivers and Luck respectively ready to take over. Brees wasn't great in SD until after they drafted Rivers, and then he got hurt at the end of the year. Manning went down and Indy got the #1 pick and had the obvious choice of drafting possibly the greatest QB prospect ever. Teddy is not Rivers or Luck.
Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
Of course there are differences, but there are also similarities. There was some doubt as to whether both of these guys would be able to play football again when the teams decided to move on from them. People consistently underestimate modern medicine and the will these players have to recover. I realize that Cam is a bit different in that he relies more on his athleticism than the other two, who were more pocket passers, but time and time again betting against a QB's health has proven to be a bad idea.bjd5211 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 3:02 am SD and Indy also had Rivers and Luck respectively ready to take over. Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
After one missed year or major injury sure, but Cam hasn't been the same in a while and has had and assortment of injuries, and he can't beat you if he's physically compromised unlike Peyton/Brees. He's done as a reliable every week fantasy starter, maybe he can put up some decent games as your #2, but investing in him would be a mistake. I won't be surprised if he takes the year off, or signs with someone in preseason when a QB goes down. There just aren't any openings around the league if LAC is out, and I really don't see NE going for him. He's not going to take a backup job.
Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
Cam was having a very good season before he tried to play through a shoulder injury in 2018. In 2019 he played games where he couldnt even plant on his injured foot.
The narrative that Cam is cooked is entirely based off injury riddled play.
It’s definitely possible that his body is done, and these injuries will plague him throughout his career; but its also possible that he’s been a little unlucky and he can return to form.
When boom busy prospects like Jordan Love are getting high first round hype, the demand for a difference maker at QB is still high. Do you think the odds Cam gets healthy are lower than Jordan Love hitting? I really dont think so, and this is why Id be very surprised if a team doesnt take a chance on Cam as soon as 2020

I would. Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
Cam is clearly not viewed as a difference maker QB by the NFL. He's viewed as a borderline starter or backup. That's the reality. If not, the pick that Jordan Love would be drafted for would be traded for Newton, which is almost zero in the realm of probability. If NFL evaluators felt Cam was the better shot to be their franchise QB, why is nobody interested? At a certain point, you have to listen to the league. Sure, Cam will be signed, but nobody is jumping for the opportunity to acquire him, and his old team just paid a career backup to take his place.IZigUZag wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:10 pmCam was having a very good season before he tried to play through a shoulder injury in 2018. Hes a former #1 overall pick, and league MVP. Curious what this opinion is based on?FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:19 pm

What's you're point? That's gone. It's like saying Eli Manning was a 2 time SB winner for the last 3 years. Meaningless. The present is what matters. My opinion is based on the reality the NFL is clearly telling us. Honest question: Do you have Cam on a roster?IZigUZag wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:21 pmHes a former #1 overall pick, and league MVP. This logic just sounds ridiculous to me and I had to ask.
Hes done a hell of a lot more than Joe Flacco has ever done, and a team still gave him a chance at another starting gig.

Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
As a FF QB, sure? Except as an NFL QB that's a massive lie. Joe Flacco won a Super Bowl and a Super Bowl MVP. So Flacco has done a hell of a lot more than Cam will ever do, or has done, in that regard, and that counts more. So anyway, the NFL is saying Cam isn't even a back end starter right now. I don't find it surprising since he's never been a particularly good passer and his rushing upside is now gone. Same thing will happen to other similar QB's in their earlier twenties by the time they are his age. No NFL team sees the upside at this point, and I can't blame them.IZigUZag wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:33 pmNot a single one.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:24 pmWhat's you're point? Re: Panthers give Cam permission to seek trade
Because no team has traded for him and there's been no talk about anyone trading for him, even with his extremely cheap contract for a starting QB. If teams viewed him as anywhere near an MVP caliber player still they would be all over him.IZigUZag wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:21 pmHes a former #1 overall pick, and league MVP.
