Way to tank if using potential points as draft orderer?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Way to tank if using potential points as draft orderer?

Postby Houptie » Mon Dec 02, 2019 12:27 pm

My league is planning on implementing a new draft order system for non-playoff teams that is basically reverse order of "potential points" or "max points for". For those new to these terms it is basically the amount of points your team gets if it were to play its optimal lineup everyweek.

This system does its best to give the true worst teams the best picks. Is there anyway to get around this or "tank" a year without completely dismantling your team? Anything that you have ever seen or done? The closest that I can think of is just trying to stack as many high upside QB's on your roster limiting the amount of other positions? IDK, it is a superflex league so the QB are still extremely valuable.

Sounds like a best ball format essentially. Outside of having a top to bottom roster full of low scoring players (outside of a couple), there is no way to tank. Your roster would have to be really bad as random players put up points every week out of nowhere.

Most of my leagues are this way. I’m a fan. There is never a question of tanking, as you have to at least dismantle an entire position group to limit your potential points

I think it’s a great way to get the true worst team higher picks. Lady Luck can help teams win /lose each week, enough “luck” in a season and you can go from the first to the fourth pick easily. I say simply man up, play your team and let the chips fall where they may. No tanking, just play your guys. Miami was tanking for Tua, how did that work? Play your guys, have your best laid out plans for the next few years and roll with it.

I am a fan of potential point for the non playoff teams to determine draft order. It has worked well in my leagues that use it.

anyone know if My Fantasy League keeps that stat somewhere? We are fighting a tanking issue in one of my leagues and are adding a rule change in the off season.

trade all your WRs for RBs, or the other way around, then re-balance in the off season.

Yeah just go into the reports tab at the top of the league page, then go to standings and click power rank. It should all be there.

It has happened more than few times in my league that the team that wins it all one year ends up near the bottom the next year and vice versa. There is so much variance from year to year with players that if you are playing to tank a season from the beginning then you could be missing out on a playoff berth. And if you make the playoffs anything can happen.

Get rid of anyone that isn't part of your future. Collect draft picks. Target good players in season that are injured and can be part of your future, but wont increase your potential points. Target young players that aren't yet fantasy relevant, but will be in the future. I also tend to gut my RB because it's a volatile position and the guys at the top of drafts are usually RB.

Tanking is bad. This system is in place to keep people who want to tank from doing it.

don't roster multiple defenses. DSTs have a large variance, you don't want one blowing up on your bench.

Don't roster extra kickers (you shouldn't be doing this anyways).

Don't roster a lot of backup QBs.

Trade for guys on IR who will come back strong next year.

Here's what I did for team 1 in my sig:

I completely punted the RB position. Sold any RBs of value and loaded up on young, high upside WRs and TEs, as well as future picks.

This ensured I wasn't competitive enough to make the playoffs, and if we were doing potential points, it would have had to have been a crazy fluky week for any of my RBs to hit. I was able to legally "tank" by doing this.

Now I've got picks 5, 8, a late 1st TBD, 15, 18, two more late 2nds TBD, 29, and 32 in a deep draft class that is loaded with RBs.

Same for my team 1 in sig. I secured the 1.01, 2.01 etc. Got lucky and traded Penny and a mid 2nd in 2019 for what ended up being the 1.02 and 2.02 this year. Made it a point to acquire Hunt. Looked into other players who i believed would be significantly less productive than they were talented this year. Ended up just selling older vets and players with uncertain futures for three more late 1sts and two more mid 2nds. All while maintaining a solid group of young WRs and TEs. Idk how well its gonna work out but i can tell you it feels good being pick rich in one of the most hyped drafts in recent memory. Lol
